Alok Verma's New Role at SAIL's Rourkela Steel Plant: A Legacy of Leadership

On January 8, 2025, Alok Verma officially took charge as the Director In-Charge of the Rourkela Steel Plant, part of the Steel Authority of India Limited. Verma, a Mechanical Engineering graduate from BIT Sindri (Ranchi University), has had a 32-year-long career at Bokaro Steel Plant, where he made significant contributions across multiple sectors, particularly in the Rolling Mills and business analytics. His expertise, vision, and achievements are now set to influence Rourkela's growth trajectory.

A Career Built on Expertise and Innovation

Verma's journey at Bokaro Steel Plant began in 1991 when he joined as a Management Trainee (Technical). Over the years, his efforts led to the successful completion of multiple rolling mill projects in 1997, 2007, 2015, and 2023, with each contributing to improvements in production capacity and technological advancements. His background in Six Sigma Black Belt certification and patenting technical designs underscores his commitment to quality improvement and operational efficiency.

In addition to operational success, Verma has been instrumental in areas such as ERP implementation, product mix optimization, and business analytics, ensuring that production aligns with market demands. These initiatives have significantly contributed to better decision-making, as well as higher product quality and production volumes.

Leadership in the Mines Sector

In July 2023, Verma was promoted to Executive Director (ED), where he took on the responsibility of overseeing the Mines of Rourkela Steel Plant. Under his leadership, the Odisha Group of Mines integrated its operations seamlessly with RSP. This integration culminated in a major success: the resumption of manganese mining in Bolani after nearly 40 years. Furthermore, Verma's leadership contributed to a record iron ore production of 14.30 million metric tons in fiscal year 2023-24.

Verma’s strategic vision also helped in the dispatch of dump fines from Bolani and tailings from Barsua to external agencies for pellet conversion, enhancing the efficiency of mining operations. Notably, he also oversaw the installation of a tertiary crusher for oversize lump control at Bolani Ores Mines, improving the mine’s operational reliability.

A Technocrat with Global Vision

Verma’s accomplishments aren't confined to domestic achievements alone. He has been part of various management business simulations and led his team to national championships, even earning the title of Asian Champions. His extensive travels to Germany, France, Italy, Austria, and China have provided him with valuable insights into global steel manufacturing technologies, which he continues to apply in his work.

Leadership and Vision for Rourkela Steel Plant

Verma’s approach to leadership is rooted in his unwavering commitment to excellence and continuous improvement. Known for setting high standards and fostering a culture of innovation, he brings this ethos to his new role at Rourkela Steel Plant. His vision for RSP involves leveraging the plant’s strengths in steel production while also focusing on sustainable practices and advanced technologies.

Having been promoted to ED (Works) on September 30, 2024, and serving as ED In-Charge since November 15, 2024, Verma’s deep understanding of operations, project management, and resource optimization makes him a key figure in driving RSP’s future growth.
