Kametstal’s Bold Leap into Steel Innovation: 13 New Products in 2024

Kametstal, a key member of the Metinvest Group, made a significant leap in 2024 by successfully introducing 13 new types of steel products, 12 of which are part of the long products segment. This achievement was a crucial part of Metinvest's broader goal of expanding its product offerings, as the group introduced a total of 20 new products across its operations this year. Kametstal’s contribution is particularly noteworthy as it bolsters the company’s competitive edge and enhances its presence in both European and domestic steel markets.

A Focus on Construction and Mining Industries

A major highlight of Kametstal's new product range includes innovations in rebar and wire rods, products essential for construction and mining sectors. The company’s rolling shop produced 12 new types of rolled products, including rebar with diameters of 9.5 mm and 11.5 mm designed specifically for construction use. These new steel products are designed to reduce metal consumption in concrete structures, maintaining strength while improving material efficiency, a key concern for the modern construction industry.

In addition to this, Kametstal expanded its portfolio of wire rod products. Six new steel grades were introduced to meet market demands both within Ukraine and abroad. These products are expected to cater to various industrial sectors, including construction, machine building, and mining. Specifically, the company launched SVP-33 profiles, intended for the mining industry, and hot-rolled rounds with a diameter of 27 mm, designed for the machine building industry. This product diversification reflects Kametstal’s agile response to changing market demands and its commitment to quality.

Technological Advancements in Steel Production

One of the technological advancements that facilitated this expansion was the improvement in the production of square continuously cast billets. These billets now possess enhanced chemical and structural properties, achieved through the development of stop-casting technology. This innovation prevents steel oxidation during the casting process and allows Kametstal to meet the heightened requirements of European consumers, which has been crucial in maintaining their competitive position in the region.

The plant’s Basic Oxygen Furnace shop played a central role in refining the production process, especially in crafting high-quality billets. This technological development not only enhances the performance of the steel but also ensures it complies with strict European standards, increasing the plant’s potential for future exports and reinforcing Kametstal’s position as an industry leader.

Compliance and Certification

Kametstal's focus on quality was further validated when it obtained certifications for compliance with Polish construction standards in 2024. As part of its efforts to enhance its international presence, the company produced 18,000 metric tons of B500B rebar specifically for the Polish market. This move underscores Kametstal’s growing influence in Europe, as the company increasingly aligns its products with the standards of diverse international markets.

Kametstal’s Customer-Centric Approach

The company attributes its success to a customer-focused approach, with Kametstal consistently adapting its production lines to meet the needs of both regular and custom orders. Despite the challenging conditions in the Ukrainian and European metal markets, the team at Kametstal has been able to maintain its leadership position through timely innovation and responsiveness to customer demands.

Aleksandr Oliynyk, the Chief Rolling Officer at Kametstal, emphasized that the company's ability to fulfill its 2024 product development targets has solidified Kametstal's reputation as a customer-oriented manufacturer. Oliynyk further noted that the company would continue to push forward with its product innovation strategy, already laying the groundwork for its 2025 New Products Development Program.

Strategic Impact on Metinvest Group

Kametstal’s introduction of 13 new steel products in 2024 has not only solidified its leadership within the Metinvest Group but also contributed to the overall diversification of the group’s product range. As one of the most innovative players within Metinvest, Kametstal’s success highlights the importance of technological advancements and customer-oriented solutions in driving long-term growth.

As Metinvest continues to expand its presence in international markets, Kametstal’s innovative approach to product development will likely play a pivotal role in the company’s strategy for the future. The new products introduced in 2024 are expected to help Kametstal remain competitive in the face of fluctuating market conditions and evolving customer needs.
