Baosteel’s Modernization for the Future of Steel Manufacturing

Baosteel, the crown jewel of China Baowu Steel Group Corporation and the world's largest steel producer, is undergoing a major upgrade at its Baoshan plant in Shanghai, China. This extensive modernization project, led by Primetals Technologies, is aimed at future-proofing Baosteel’s Pickling Line Tandem Cold Mill operations by enhancing electrics, automation, and digital solutions. Originally built in 1998 for tinplate production, the PLTCM is set to evolve to ensure that Baosteel remains at the forefront of the global steel industry.

A Complete Overhaul: Electrics and Automation Systems

As part of this upgrade, Primetals Technologies will provide an extensive suite of electrical and automation systems. These include Level 1 automation, measuring equipment, digital assistant systems, and motors and drives. A key highlight is the installation of a Central Operation Cockpit, which will give operators a bird’s-eye view of the entire production line. This centralization allows a single operator to oversee multiple sections of the plant, dramatically reducing the need for manual intervention and boosting operational efficiency.

The COC system is particularly advanced, supporting 63 live cameras, three of which are equipped with integrated fire detection technology. The cameras are strategically placed across the plant, ensuring real-time monitoring and enabling quick responses to potential issues. This digital transformation ensures increased productivity, stable production, and reproducible high-quality products, making it a pivotal part of Baosteel’s future operations.

Enhanced Production Processes and Equipment

Beyond the digital upgrades, Baosteel’s PLTCM modernization will include new measurement equipment systems and customer-supplied mechanical equipment. These updates will improve key areas such as the entry section, welding machine, scale breaker, pickling tanks, side trimmer, and work-roll drive trains for stands No. 4 and 5. By improving these elements, Baosteel will ensure greater accuracy, reliability, and speed throughout the production process.

Digital Assistant Systems: Streamlining Operations

One of the most innovative aspects of the modernization project is the implementation of various digital assistant systems. These systems include automated coil identification, strip position identification, and side trimming scrap detection, all of which work in conjunction with the COC. By automating these tasks, Baosteel will significantly reduce the potential for human error and enhance the overall efficiency and quality of production.

Baosteel’s Position as the World’s Largest Steel Producer

Baosteel’s plant in Baoshan is a critical site for the company, which operates multiple facilities across China, including in Wuhan, Meishan, and Zhanjiang. Baosteel's product portfolio spans a wide array of flat and long products, including carbon, low-alloyed, alloyed, and silicon steel grades. These materials are crucial for various industries, including automotive, construction, and manufacturing. By modernizing its PLTCM, Baosteel ensures it will continue to meet the growing demand for high-quality steel products across the globe.

Meeting Future Demands: Project Completion and Expectations

The modernization project is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2026. Once finished, the new PLTCM will not only be able to meet current production needs but will also be fully equipped to handle future demands. The integration of advanced digital technologies will ensure that Baosteel’s operations remain competitive in an increasingly digitized and environmentally-conscious steel industry.

As Baosteel continues to invest in cutting-edge technologies, its position as a global leader in steel production remains unchallenged, ensuring its capability to meet the growing demands of various industries while maintaining the highest standards of quality and efficiency.
