Avocado Extract as an Eco-Friendly Corrosion Inhibitor for Carbon Steel in Salty Formation Water

In the petroleum industry, the extraction of oil and gas from underground reservoirs often produces formation water, which naturally occurs alongside hydrocarbons. This water, typically rich in salts such as chlorides, sulfates, and carbonates, can pose a significant challenge to the integrity of metal equipment. The high chloride concentration, in particular, accelerates the corrosion of carbon steel, which is commonly used in wellbore tubulars and other equipment. Therefore, the development of effective corrosion inhibitors is critical to ensuring the longevity and safety of these assets.

While traditional corrosion inhibitors often rely on synthetic chemicals, plant extracts have recently gained attention as eco-friendly alternatives. Among these, avocado extract stands out due to its natural composition and potential to offer sustainable protection against corrosion. This study, published in Scientific Reports, investigates the effectiveness of avocado extract as a corrosion inhibitor in salty formation water derived from West Egyptian petroleum fields, marking the first time avocado extract has been tested for this application.

The Problem of Corrosion in Formation Water

Formation water is often brine-rich, with high concentrations of chloride ions. When in contact with metals, these ions accelerate the oxidation process, leading to corrosion. This degradation can damage essential production equipment, resulting in costly repairs, unscheduled downtimes, and even safety hazards. Therefore, corrosion control is vital in the oil and gas industry, where equipment is subjected to extreme conditions.

To combat corrosion, the industry typically uses chemical inhibitors that prevent the interaction between metal surfaces and corrosive agents in the water. However, many of these inhibitors are synthetic and can have adverse environmental impacts, especially when large quantities are used over time. This has led to increasing interest in green inhibitors, which are naturally derived and less harmful to the environment.

Why Avocado Extract?

Avocados, known for their rich nutritional content, also contain a variety of bioactive compounds such as phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and fatty acids. These substances are believed to act as corrosion inhibitors by forming a protective barrier on the metal surface, thereby preventing or slowing the corrosion process. Given these natural properties, avocado extract has the potential to serve as a sustainable alternative to traditional synthetic corrosion inhibitors.

The current study focuses on the effectiveness of avocado fruit extract in inhibiting corrosion of carbon steel in salty formation water. The selection of avocado extract over other plant-based extracts is based on several factors, including the extract’s availability, chemical composition, and its compatibility with the formation water system. As an abundant and environmentally beneficial resource, avocado extract could meet the growing demand for eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors.

Methodology: Assessing Corrosion Inhibition

The research team employed a combination of weight loss and electrochemical experiments to evaluate the corrosion behavior of carbon steel in the presence of varying concentrations of avocado extract, ranging from 20 mg/L to 100 mg/L. Several analytical techniques were used to study the corrosion properties and surface characteristics of the carbon steel samples:

1. Weight Loss Method: This method involved exposing carbon steel samples to salty formation water with and without avocado extract, then measuring the mass loss due to corrosion over time.

2. Electrochemical Techniques: Tafel polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to assess the corrosion rate and resistance of the steel. These methods provide detailed insights into the electrochemical behavior of the steel in the presence of avocado extract.

3. Surface Analysis: To further understand the effectiveness of avocado extract in preventing corrosion, the researchers used scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, and UV-visible spectroscopy. These techniques helped identify the chemical composition of the corrosion products and the morphology of the corroded steel surface.

Key Findings: Effectiveness of Avocado Extract

The results of the study showed that avocado extract was highly effective as a corrosion inhibitor. The extract's corrosion inhibition efficiency reached a peak value of 92.4% at a concentration of 100 mg/L, making it one of the most potent green inhibitors tested in similar conditions. This high efficiency suggests that avocado extract forms a robust protective layer on the metal surface, significantly reducing corrosion.

The study also identified that the adsorption behavior of avocado extract follows a Langmuir adsorption isotherm, indicating that the extract molecules are adsorbed in a monolayer on the metal surface. The Langmuir model is commonly used to describe the adsorption of inhibitors onto metal surfaces and suggests that the extract's active compounds are effectively interacting with the steel, blocking the corrosive agents from reaching the metal surface.

Furthermore, the activation energy for the oxidation reaction increased from 13.8 kJ/mol (in the absence of the inhibitor) to 51.6 kJ/mol (with the inhibitor), indicating that the presence of avocado extract significantly hinders the corrosion process, making it more difficult for the metal to oxidize.

Environmental and Practical Implications

The use of avocado extract as a corrosion inhibitor offers several practical advantages, especially in terms of environmental sustainability. Traditional chemical inhibitors can have adverse environmental impacts, particularly when released into water bodies. In contrast, avocado extract is biodegradable and poses no significant environmental risks, aligning with the industry's increasing emphasis on green chemistry.

Additionally, the availability of avocados in many regions around the world makes this plant extract an attractive alternative to costly and potentially harmful synthetic inhibitors. The findings of this study pave the way for future research into the potential applications of avocado extract in industrial corrosion control, particularly in the oil and gas sector.

While this study demonstrates the promising potential of avocado extract as a corrosion inhibitor, further research is needed to fully understand its long-term effectiveness and practical applications. Future studies could explore:
