JSPL and Danieli Join Forces for Steckel Mill Enhancement with Exstream II System

Jindal Steel and Power Limited has once again chosen Danieli technology for the upgrade of its Steckel mill in Raigarh, India. The installation of the Exstream II cooling system marks a significant step forward in plate production capabilities. This new Danieli Direct Quench system is designed to optimize the cooling process, offering enhanced flexibility and the ability to achieve a broader range of cooling rates and strategies.

Exstream II: A Leap Forward in Plate Cooling Technology

The Exstream II system represents the latest generation of cooling technology, specifically designed to meet the growing demand for high-quality plates. With its ability to produce a variety of added-value products such as High-Strength Steels, it significantly reduces operational expenditures by minimizing the need for alloying elements during the steelmaking process. This reduction leads to improved weldability of the final products.

One of the system's most impressive features is its dual-mode operation. The Direct Quench section of Exstream II can function in:

• High-pressure mode: This provides extremely high cooling capabilities, essential for producing advanced steels with specific mechanical properties.

• Low-pressure mode: Operating similarly to a conventional Accelerated Cooling System, this mode is used for more standard cooling requirements.

This versatility allows the system to cater to a wide range of production needs, offering greater flexibility for JSPL in their production of steel plates.

Precision Cooling for Superior Plate Quality

A key aspect of the Exstream II system is its nozzle pattern, which is engineered to ensure a uniform and effective cooling process across the entire width of the plate. The system features headers arranged in zones, each controlled by proportional valves. This allows for precise regulation of the thermal profile, enabling the creation of specific thermal gradients that result in consistently high-quality final products.

With the ability to control the cooling process down to the finest details, the system ensures that the final plate temperatures are optimized for a variety of different end-use applications, such as structural steel or high-strength steels for demanding industries like automotive and energy.

A Comprehensive Upgrade for Long-Term Performance

This latest installation of the Exstream II cooling system follows a major revamping project that was completed several years ago at the Steckel mill. The earlier upgrades included improvements to critical elements like the four-high finishing stand, pinch-roll shears, and automation systems. Additionally, the Accelerated Cooling System was updated, and a new power downcoiler and coil handling system were installed. This combination of improvements has greatly enhanced the mill’s overall productivity and capacity.

The manufacturing of all equipment associated with the Exstream II system will take place at Danieli India’s quality workshops in Chennai, ensuring that the highest standards of precision and reliability are maintained throughout the production process.
