Severstal, one of Russia's premier steel producers, has completed a critical environmental project at its Cherepovets Steel Mill, marking a significant step in the company’s efforts to reduce industrial emissions. The company has successfully reconstructed five electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) at its agglomeration plant, a project that was part of Severstal's broader clean air program initiated in 2020. The extensive upgrade, which took over four years to complete, involved an investment of more than RUB 798 million (approximately $10.6 million USD).

Revamping Electrostatic Precipitators for Cleaner Air

Electrostatic precipitators are critical pieces of equipment used in industrial plants to capture and remove dust particles from exhaust gases. In steel manufacturing, sintering production, an essential step where raw materials are prepared for blast furnaces, can generate significant dust emissions. The air cleaning systems in place, including the electrostatic precipitators, are vital for reducing pollutants in the air, which can pose serious environmental and health risks.

Severstal’s decision to overhaul these systems was driven by the need to comply with strict environmental regulations and contribute to broader clean air initiatives in Russia. By replacing outdated electrostatic precipitators with new, more efficient units, Severstal has significantly improved the effectiveness of its air cleaning processes.

Impressive Reduction in Dust Emissions

As part of the reconstruction project, the company replaced five of its electrostatic precipitators, including the completion of two units (No. 11 and No. 12) in sintering shop No. 3 by the end of 2024. The new units are designed to reduce the concentration of dust emissions in the exhaust gases. Prior to the upgrade, the concentration of dust was at 170 mg/m³. Post-reconstruction, the concentration has dropped to just 30 mg/m³, representing a substantial improvement in air quality.

This significant reduction in dust emissions directly translates to a decrease in the environmental footprint of the Cherepovets plant. During the course of the project, Severstal achieved an actual reduction of 260 metric tons (mt) of dust emissions, demonstrating the effectiveness of the modernization effort.

Meeting and Exceeding Environmental Targets

The upgrade to the electrostatic precipitators is part of Severstal’s larger commitment to reducing its environmental impact, in line with the Russian federal government’s clean air program. The company’s dedication to environmental stewardship has yielded impressive results. From 2017 to 2024, Severstal reduced its total gross emissions by 90.9 metric tons (30.7%)—a remarkable achievement that exceeds the company’s obligation to reduce emissions by at least 20% ahead of schedule. Furthermore, the reduction of priority pollutants, such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, amounted to 15.3 metric tons (27.6%), showcasing the company’s proactive approach to air quality.
