Jindal Steel and Power’s Visionary ₹70,000 Crore Investment in Odisha’s Industrial Future

Jindal Steel and Power (JSP) has announced an ambitious investment plan of ₹70,000 crore in Odisha, underscoring its commitment to driving both industrial growth and social transformation in the state. This significant move, revealed by JSP Chairman Mr. Naveen Jindal during the Utkarsh Odisha Conclave – 2025, highlights the company’s dedication to supporting Odisha’s emergence as a global industrial leader while improving the quality of life for its residents. The announcement was made in the presence of key political figures, including Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Odisha’s Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi.

The ₹70,000 crore investment will focus on bolstering the state’s industrial infrastructure and contributing to the wider vision of national self-reliance. The investment also aligns with JSP’s long-term strategy of establishing sustainable industrial growth and contributing to India’s overall economic development.

Keonjhar Steel Plant: A Key Development in Odisha’s Growth

One of the most exciting aspects of this investment is the exploration of the possibility of setting up a new steel plant in Keonjhar District, located in the mineral-rich region of Odisha. The establishment of this plant would not only create new jobs but also boost the local economy through the development of associated industries and infrastructure. JSP aims to contribute significantly to Odisha's industrial landscape, in line with the state’s vision to enhance its position as a hub for steel production and industrial innovation.

Sustainable Industrial Growth: JSP’s Green Steel Vision

JSP is already a pioneer in sustainable steel production through its India-first coal gasification plant at Angul, which uses an innovative process to reduce dependence on imported coking coal. The plant’s current capacity of 6 million metric tons per annum (MTPA) is set to double to 12 MTPA this year, with future plans to scale up to 25.2 MTPA by 2030. This expansion aims to position the Angul Steel Plant as the world’s largest and greenest steel plant, with a particular focus on hydrogen-based green steel production.

This green steel initiative is part of JSP’s broader commitment to adopting environmentally responsible industrial practices that will not only enhance the company’s operational efficiency but also contribute significantly to India’s goals of achieving sustainability in its industrial sector.

Social Transformation: JSP’s Contributions to Community Development

In addition to its industrial advancements, JSP has made substantial investments in social initiatives across Odisha. Over the past decade, the company has allocated ₹900 crore toward sustainable social programs aimed at improving the lives of local communities. These initiatives focus on key areas such as healthcare, education, skill development, women’s empowerment, rural livelihoods, and support for sports, arts, and culture.

JSP’s commitment to social upliftment is reflected in its wide-reaching programs that have positively impacted thousands of families in Odisha, transforming lives and providing critical resources to underserved communities. These investments are a vital part of JSP’s long-term vision for balanced, inclusive growth in Odisha.

Strengthening Odisha’s Position as an Industrial Powerhouse

The Utkarsh Odisha Conclave – 2025 provided a platform for leaders from the public and private sectors to discuss the state’s strategic importance in India’s overall economic growth. Key themes from the event emphasized the need for collaboration between the government and businesses to achieve sustainable development goals. Through its investment and innovation, JSP is positioning itself as a leader in this collaborative effort, enhancing the state’s industrial capabilities while ensuring the social and environmental well-being of its citizens.

With a comprehensive approach that integrates industrial expansion with social responsibility, JSP is contributing to the broader vision of making Odisha a global industrial leader. The company’s focus on green technology and sustainable practices in steel production sets a positive precedent for other industries to follow, helping to drive Odisha and India towards a self-reliant future.
