Huta Czestochowa's Strategic Importance to Poland’s National Security and Economy
The Polish cabinet has recently approved a strategic classification for Huta Czestochowa, a significant steel producer located in Czestochowa, Poland. This classification makes the company’s acquisition subject to government approval, a decision that underscores the mill’s critical role in the defense sector and national security. Huta Czestochowa was once part of Liberty Steel before going bankrupt, and it is currently being leased by state-owned Weglokoks.
The Tender for Huta Czestochowa’s Sale
The sale of Huta Czestochowa is set to proceed on February 17, 2024, with an initial price of PLN 226.95 million ($54.7 million). The tender, which is expected to attract several bidders, will give Weglokoks the right of first refusal, meaning they will have the first opportunity to purchase the mill. However, it is also reported that other companies, including Metinvest (a Ukrainian mining and steel company) and a Middle Eastern firm, will likely participate in the bidding process.

Huta Czestochowa holds particular strategic value to Poland due to its capability to produce hardened plate for the defense industry, which is vital for the country's military preparedness. The electric arc furnace at Huta Czestochowa has an annual crude steel capacity of 700,000 metric tons, while its plate mill has a design capacity of 1.2 million metric tons per year. However, after being idle for a year, the plant’s plate production capacity is currently limited to around 40,000 metric tons per month due to the lack of activity and reduced staff numbers.
Despite these setbacks, the plate mill remains a crucial asset, with the potential to support key industries in Poland, including defense and the wind power sector. The wind power industry is growing rapidly in Europe, and Huta Czestochowa’s plate production is expected to support this development, aligning with Poland’s renewable energy goals.
