ArcelorMittal's Strategic Investments Enhance Steel Production in Brazil
ArcelorMittal, one of the world's leading steel manufacturers, is advancing significant investments in three key facilities in Brazil. These projects are aimed at modernizing production processes, increasing capacity, and meeting the growing demand for high-quality steel products. The three facilities involved in these developments are located in Barra Mansa, Sabará, and Serra Azul, each playing a pivotal role in the company’s long-term strategy for growth in South America.
Barra Mansa: Upgrading to Boost Capacity
At ArcelorMittal’s Barra Mansa facility in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), the company is completing the installation of a new SBQ (Special Bar Quality) rolling mill. This new mill will significantly enhance the facility's ability to produce high-quality bars and profiles used in various industries such as automotive, construction, and engineering.
In addition to the rolling mill, the modernization of the steel plant is underway. These upgrades will increase the facility’s annual production capacity by an impressive 500,000 metric tons per year. This expansion is expected to provide ArcelorMittal with the flexibility to meet market demands more effectively, particularly as Brazil's industrial sector continues to recover and grow.

Sabará: Ramp-up of New SBQ Wire Rod Line
In Sabará, located in Minas Gerais (MG), ArcelorMittal has launched a new SBQ wire rod line aimed at producing high-quality wire rods for demanding applications such as high-strength steel wires. This state-of-the-art production line is currently in a ramp-up phase, meaning the company is gradually increasing its operational capacity to achieve full production efficiency.
The SBQ wire rod products produced at Sabará will cater to both domestic and international markets, serving industries that require superior-quality materials, including automotive, energy, and construction sectors. As the ramp-up progresses, the plant is expected to make a significant contribution to ArcelorMittal’s portfolio of high-performance products.
Serra Azul: Expanding Pellet Feed Production
At Mina Serra Azul in Minas Gerais, another key investment is taking shape: a new pellet feed production plant. This plant is designed to produce high-quality pellet feed, a crucial raw material for the steelmaking process, primarily used in blast furnaces to produce iron.
The construction of this plant is still ongoing, and once completed, it will help ArcelorMittal further secure its supply of iron ore and reduce reliance on external suppliers. As Brazil continues to be one of the world’s largest exporters of iron ore, this new facility at Serra Azul will ensure that ArcelorMittal has access to top-grade iron ore concentrates to support its steel production facilities in the region.
