JSW Steel Dolvi Expands with 350-ton BOF Converter and Advanced Automation

JSW Steel Dolvi has made a significant step in its strategic expansion by commissioning SMS to supply and install a 350-ton Basic Oxygen Furnace converter at its facility. The project, which is expected to increase the steel mill's production capacity by 3.7 million metric tons per annum, marks a pivotal moment in JSW Steel's ambition to strengthen its position in the global steel market.

The installation includes the provision of a twin ladle furnace, a gas cleaning plant, and advanced level 1 and level 2 automation, each designed to optimize the steel production process. These components are not only integral to the plant's capacity expansion but also aim to boost operational efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and ensure high-quality output.

A Giant Leap in Technology: The 350-ton BOF Converter

One of the standout features of this expansion is the 350-ton BOF converter, which is among the largest of its kind to be installed in India. This BOF converter is designed with an advanced oxygen lance system, capable of a maximum blowing capacity of 1,250 Nm³/min. This cutting-edge feature is expected to significantly improve the plant's production efficiency, enhancing the conversion process and reducing the time required to produce steel. The oxygen lance system introduces a more effective way to convert molten iron into steel, thus ensuring higher output and reduced operational costs.

The high-performance capabilities of this new converter, combined with other upgrades, underscore JSW Steel Dolvi’s commitment to innovation and quality. The plant will now be able to produce steel at a much higher volume and improved consistency, meeting the demands of an ever-evolving industry.

Smarter Operations with Advanced Automation

Another key aspect of this expansion is the integration of state-of-the-art automation systems. The new automation platform allows operators to have a complete view of the steel production process without the need to switch between different levels of automation. This streamlined approach simplifies plant operations and enhances control, ensuring that the plant operates at peak efficiency with minimal errors.

The automation system includes process optimization models that integrate various aspects of the steel production process, including production strategies, metallurgical models, and process control. These models are designed to ensure consistent quality and reliable production, allowing JSW Steel Dolvi to produce materials that meet the highest standards. The result is a more efficient, flexible, and adaptable operation, able to respond quickly to market needs and production requirements.

Building Stronger Ties: JSW Steel and SMS

The strong business relationship between JSW Steel and SMS Group has played a pivotal role in the success of this project. With a history of successful collaborations, this new order further strengthens SMS Group’s position as a technology leader in the steel industry. The commissioning of the BOF converter, twin ladle furnace, and other advanced equipment is a clear indication of the trust and reliance JSW Steel has in SMS Group’s ability to deliver cutting-edge, reliable solutions.

In addition to the BOF converter, SMS secured separate orders in 2024 for a 4.5-mtpa blast furnace and a first-of-its-kind CSP® Nexus—a highly integrated casting and rolling mill. The CSP® Nexus plant will be capable of producing hot strip and plate with a maximum width of 2,600 millimeters on a single line, further enhancing JSW Steel’s capacity to meet the growing demand for steel products.
