IIM Jamshedpur Seminar Focuses on Screening’s Role in Steel Production

The Indian Institute of Metals Jamshedpur Chapter, in collaboration with Tata Steel, CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory, and National Institute of Technology Jamshedpur, organized an international seminar on Screening and Sizing i3S. The event, which began today at Hotel Alcor, marks a significant step in advancing discussions on steel production efficiency, sustainability, and the pivotal role of screening technology.

Keynote Address and Seminar Inauguration

The two-day seminar kicked off with an inauguration led by Dr. Siddharatha Misra, Chairman of i3S and Chief of Process Research, R&D at Tata Steel. Dr. Misra welcomed delegates, sponsors, dignitaries, and students, setting the stage for an informative exchange of ideas. Professor Ashok Kumar, Faculty at NIT Jamshedpur and Chairman of the IIM Jamshedpur chapter, presented an overview of the chapter’s activities and the importance of this event.

Several key figures from the steel and metallurgical industries took the stage, including:

• Mr. Subodh Pandey, VP Technology, R&D at NMB and Graphene, Tata Steel.

• Professor B. K. Mishra, Distinguished Visiting Professor at IIT Bhubaneswar.

• D. B. Sundara Raman, Vice President of Raw Materials at Tata Steel.

The Role of Screening in Steel Production

The central theme of the seminar was the role of screening and sizing in optimizing the steel production process. Experts emphasized that screening plays a vital role in improving productivity by enabling the utilization of low-grade ores, which would otherwise be considered waste. This process helps in maximizing production and contributing to a more sustainable and eco-friendly steel industry. By effectively turning waste into valuable resources, the seminar highlighted the potential to reduce environmental impact while meeting growing demand for steel.

Global Expertise and Innovations in Screening

The seminar brought together a global array of experts, engineers, and researchers from leading institutions, including:

• Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden),

• CSIRO Australia (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation),

• Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) institutions across India, including IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Hyderabad, IIT-ISM Dhanbad, and Kazi Nazrul University.

In addition to academic experts, representatives from top OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers), such as Sandvik, Metso, Weir Minerals, FLSmidth, Haver & Boecker, Derrick Corporation, and Tata Steel, presented their insights on cutting-edge technologies and innovations in the field of screening and sizing.

Hands-On Demonstrations and Networking Opportunities

The seminar also featured eight demonstration stalls from OEMs, offering hands-on experiences with the latest technologies in screening and sizing. These demonstrations provided valuable insights into real-world applications of the technologies discussed during the presentations. Additionally, there were expert panels and ample networking opportunities, allowing participants to exchange ideas and forge potential collaborations.

Poster Presentations and Student Participation

As part of the seminar, 11 poster presentations from students at premier Indian institutes showcased the latest advancements in screening technologies. This provided a platform for young researchers to present their work and gain exposure to industry professionals. The student involvement underscored the growing interest in mineral engineering and the role of screening in the development of sustainable steel production practices.
