In a groundbreaking move aimed at revolutionizing energy production in Europe, Essar Energy Transition has revealed plans to construct the continent’s first hydrogen-ready combined heat and power plant. Named EET Hydrogen Power, this ambitious project is set to be established at the Stanlow refinery located in the United Kingdom. This initiative is part of EET’s broader strategy to steer the UK towards becoming a leader in low-carbon energy solutions.

EET Hydrogen Power is slated to be developed in two phases, culminating in a robust capacity of 125 megawatts (MW) along with the capability to produce 6,000 metric tons of steam daily. This revolutionary plant aims to replace traditional hydrocarbon-based systems, effectively slashing carbon dioxide emissions by a monumental 740,000 metric tons annually. This move aligns with EET’s vision to transform Stanlow Refinery into the globe’s most environmentally friendly refinery by reducing overall emissions by an astounding 95% before 2030.

The Stanlow refinery, currently powered by existing boiler units generating nearly 50MW of energy, will witness a transformative shift with the implementation of EET Hydrogen Power. This transition underscores Essar’s commitment not only to decarbonize its own operations but also to spearhead a paradigm shift in the industrial sector towards sustainable energy practices.

Essar Energy Transition’s ambitious venture extends beyond mere refinery operations. The initiative also aims to bolster the region’s industrial landscape by providing low-carbon power to neighboring industries, thus supporting their respective decarbonization goals. Moreover, EET Hydrogen Power will operate as an independent entity under EET’s expansive umbrella, further solidifying its stature as a pivotal player in the UK’s energy transition journey.

Commenting on the announcement, Tony Fountain, managing partner of Essar Energy Transition, emphasized the significance of EET Hydrogen Power in advancing the UK’s low-carbon energy agenda. He highlighted that this initiative not only showcases Essar’s commitment to environmental stewardship but also positions the UK at the forefront of global efforts to combat climate change through innovative energy solutions.

Rob Wallace, CEO of EET Hydrogen Power, underscored the strategic importance of the project, describing Stanlow as a future hub for low-carbon energy within the HyNet Industrial Cluster. By leveraging 100% hydrogen-ready gas-turbine technology and integrating EET Hydrogen’s low-carbon hydrogen, the project aims to achieve substantial regional emissions reductions, setting a precedent for sustainable industrial practices across Europe.
