In a significant win for sustainable urban development, the renowned Stefano Boeri Architetti studio has secured the top spot in an international competition to revitalize a three-hectare former industrial site in the heart of Bratislava, Slovakia. The competition, announced by Penta Real Estate in late 2023, sought innovative designs for the Chalupkova district, a long-abandoned area poised for transformation into a contemporary architectural hub.

The winning "Urban Oasis" masterplan, conceived by Stefano Boeri Architetti, envisions a central hub for the city through an ambitious urban regeneration project. The plan centers around the creation of an expansive public park, flanked by a striking skyscraper and four medium-density buildings housing 1,300 apartments. The diverse mix of housing sizes caters to a wide range of residents, fostering a vibrant and inclusive community.

Competing against renowned international firms such as Bjarke Ingels Group, Gensler, MAD Architects, and MVRDV, Stefano Boeri Architetti's proposal stood out for its "European matrix." The jury praised the project's seamless blend of traditional stone and brick facades with lush greenery, creating a harmonious balance between the built environment and nature.

Architect Stefano Boeri, commenting on the victory, emphasized the project's role in advancing Bratislava towards the model of an "Archipelago metropolis." He envisioned the Urban Oasis as a self-sustaining neighborhood, producing clean energy and embodying the diversity and vitality of European cities while integrating living nature through plants and trees at the center and on building facades.

The tower, strategically positioned at a focal point within the masterplan, is set to become Bratislava's new urban landmark, offering breathtaking views of the city. The surrounding buildings, varying in height, have been meticulously designed to maximize natural light penetration into the park while providing protection from wind and noise pollution. Terraces and green roofs serve as recreational spaces for the community, while commercial spaces and public services enhance the synergy between the park and residential areas.

The project's facades showcase a high level of diversification, featuring irregularities and undulations that disperse sound waves and minimize noise transmission. Loggias along the busiest streets offer additional protection from both sound and Bratislava's high winds, while balconies facing the park create a seamless connection with nature.

Nature plays a pivotal role in the Urban Oasis, contributing to local biodiversity and optimizing the ecosystem benefits of urban forestry. The green ring encircling the project's perimeter acts as a natural filter, absorbing sound and reducing noise pollution. Pedestrian areas and cycle paths prioritize sustainable mobility, promoting a healthier and more environmentally conscious lifestyle for residents.

The project's commitment to sustainability extends to its energy production, with solar panels covering approximately 4,600 square meters of the buildings' roofs. Urban drainage systems, including green roofs, permeable pavements, and rainwater collection basins, further mitigate the neighborhood's environmental impact.

Construction of the first residential phase is slated to commence in 2026, subject to the progress of the authorization process. The entire project will be implemented in four phases over approximately ten years, marking a significant milestone in Bratislava's urban development.
