Kardemir to Supply Steel Rails for Turkey's High-Speed Railway Project

Kardemir Karabuk Demir Celik Sanayi ve Ticaret A.S., one of Turkey’s prominent integrated long steel producers, has successfully entered into an agreement to supply steel rails for the Ankara-Izmir high-speed railway project. This agreement positions Kardemir as a key contributor to one of the most important infrastructure projects in Turkey, which is set to enhance connectivity between two major cities.

The Steel Rail Supply Agreement

Under the agreement, Kardemir will supply 15,000 metric tons of steel rails for the high-speed railway, providing a critical component for the track construction. The rails to be delivered will include 60E2 and R260 grades, which are known for their durability and suitability for high-speed rail applications. These specific grades of steel are designed to withstand the high stresses and frequent use associated with high-speed rail operations, making them essential for the safety and longevity of the railway infrastructure.

The delivery of the steel rails will be carried out in three stages, ensuring a steady supply as the construction of the railway progresses. The phased delivery system allows for efficient logistical planning and timely integration of the rails into the ongoing development of the project.

Significance of the Ankara-Izmir High-Speed Railway

The Ankara-Izmir high-speed railway project is one of the most ambitious and transformative infrastructure initiatives in Turkey. Once completed, this railway will significantly shorten travel time between the capital Ankara and Izmir, two of Turkey’s most populous and economically important cities. The railway line is expected to enhance economic integration, improve regional connectivity, and provide a modern, environmentally-friendly alternative to road and air travel.

The steel rails supplied by Kardemir will play an integral role in ensuring the structural integrity and operational efficiency of the high-speed railway. As high-speed trains demand higher levels of rail strength and smoothness to safely operate at elevated speeds, the quality of the steel rails is crucial for achieving optimal performance and safety standards.

Meeting the Standards for High-Speed Rail Applications

The 60E2 and R260 steel rail grades chosen for the Ankara-Izmir project are specifically designed to meet the rigorous demands of high-speed railway systems. These grades are produced to withstand the mechanical stresses and vibrations caused by high-speed trains, ensuring long-term performance under intense conditions. Both grades are recognized for their high tensile strength and resilience, qualities essential for maintaining the stability and safety of high-speed tracks.

The 60E2 grade is particularly noted for its excellent fatigue resistance and ability to endure heavy dynamic loads, making it ideal for high-speed trains. The R260 grade, on the other hand, is specifically designed to offer enhanced wear resistance, a crucial feature for maintaining smooth track operations over time.
