The global community is facing significant challenges in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals by the 2030 deadline. With only six years left, the upcoming High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, scheduled for July 8 to 17 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, is seen as crucial. This year's forum aims to reignite and accelerate efforts to fulfill these ambitious goals.
The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2024 highlights several persistent issues hindering progress, including the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, escalating climate change, and ongoing conflicts worldwide. These factors have exacerbated conditions of extreme poverty and hunger, with millions more affected compared to three years ago. Additionally, greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, underscoring the urgent need for concerted global action.
This year’s forum theme focuses on reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty amid these multiple crises. It will feature a mix of virtual and in-person participation from global leaders such as Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Naomi Mata’afa, Prime Minister of Samoa, and notable former leaders like Michelle Bachelet of Chile. High-level officials, including the UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed and various other dignitaries, will also participate, bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders.
Throughout the HLPF, thirty-seven countries will present their Voluntary National Reviews, showcasing the steps they have taken towards achieving the SDGs. These presentations are part of the Ministerial Segment, which also includes a series of thematic reviews of specific SDGs such as Zero Hunger, Climate Action, and Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.
One of the highlights of the forum will be the Special Event on Transforming Education, convened by the UN Secretary-General. This event marks nearly two years since the Transforming Education Summit and aims to catalyze further actions in education, which is critical for sustainable development. Another significant session, "Keeping the SDG Promise: Pathways to Acceleration," will focus on mobilizing investments and showcasing successful programs and countries that are making notable progress.
The forum will also host a Global Policy Dialogue with the UN High-level Advisory Board on Economic and Social Affairs to discuss emerging socioeconomic trends and strategies for overcoming key challenges to SDG achievement. Additionally, the launch of the World Population Prospects 2024 will provide essential demographic data to help tailor future initiatives.
As the world gears up for the HLPF, the stakes are high, and the urgency is palpable. With the SDGs off track, this forum is not just a routine gathering but a critical juncture to foster innovation, strengthen partnerships, and galvanize the global community towards a more sustainable and equitable future.
