Acciaieria Arvedi, in collaboration with Primetals Technologies, is embarking on a transformative upgrade of its steel production facilities in Cremona, Italy. This ambitious project involves converting their vacuum degassing plants into advanced vacuum oxygen decarburization systems. Scheduled for completion in the latter half of 2025, this initiative represents a strategic move by Acciaieria Arvedi to enter the electrical steel market and diversify its product portfolio.
The upgrade entails equipping the VOD systems with cutting-edge technology provided by Primetals Technologies. Key components include water-cooled copper-plated ladle covers, oxygen lance systems, gas coolers, vacuum control systems, and waste-gas burners. This comprehensive overhaul aims to enhance operational efficiency, reduce environmental footprint, and improve workplace safety at Acciaieria Arvedi's Cremona plant.
Acciaieria Arvedi's decision to adopt VOD technology underscores their commitment to technological innovation and sustainability in steel production. By pioneering the EAF – LF – VD-OB route for producing electrical and ultra-low-carbon/interstitial-free, ULC/IF, steel grades, they aim to set new industry standards and secure a competitive edge in the global steel market.
Established in 1992, Acciaieria Arvedi's Cremona plant is renowned as Europe's first mini-mill for flat-rolled steel and the world's second. With a current capacity of four million metric tons per year, the plant plays a pivotal role in Italy's steel industry, supplying high-strength low-alloy grades to the automotive sector and serving the stainless steel market. The VOD upgrade aligns with Acciaieria Arvedi's strategic goals to expand production capabilities, meet evolving market demands, and foster sustainable growth.
