OMNIVISION, a leading innovator in semiconductor technology, has launched the OG0TC global shutter image sensor, tailored specifically for advanced augmented reality, virtual reality, and mixed reality tracking cameras. The OG0TC represents a milestone for OMNIVISION, being the first in its class to integrate the patented DCG™ high dynamic range technology into the AR/VR/MR market.
The OG0TC sensor boasts a compact form factor, measuring just 1.64mm x 1.64mm, making it ideal for integration into small, battery-powered devices such as consumer headsets and glasses. This size is crucial for optimizing inward-facing tracking cameras, essential for accurately capturing facial movements and expressions in immersive environments. Moreover, the OG0TC maintains pin-to-pin compatibility with OMNIVISION’s previous-generation sensors, ensuring seamless upgrades for existing designs without additional design changes.
Devang Patel, Marketing Director for IoT/Emerging at OMNIVISION, emphasized the sensor's ultra-low power consumption as a critical advantage for AR/VR devices. The OG0TC reduces power usage by over 40% compared to its predecessor, the OG0TB, despite already being known for its exceptionally low power consumption. This efficiency enhancement enables extended battery life, a crucial requirement for immersive experiences that rely heavily on battery-powered devices.
Key technical features of the OG0TC include its construction on OMNIVISION’s advanced PureCel®Plus-S stacked-die technology. The sensor achieves a resolution of 400x400 pixels with 2.2-micron pixels, housed in a compact 1/14.46-inch optical format. OMNIVISION’s Nyxel® technology further enhances performance by maximizing quantum efficiency at the 940nm near-infrared (NIR) wavelength, ensuring clear and precise imaging of moving objects.
In addition to power efficiency and compact design, the OG0TC excels in image quality with its high modulation transfer function. This feature enhances image sharpness, contrast, and detail, crucial for immersive AR/VR experiences where visual clarity is paramount. The sensor supports a flexible interface including MIPI with multi-drop and CPHY, accommodating diverse connectivity requirements across different device platforms.
Patel highlighted the introduction of OMNIVISION’s single-exposure DCG™ HDR technology to the AR/VR market as a significant advancement. This technology, proven successful in sectors such as security, mobile, and automotive industries, ensures ghost-free image capture even in challenging lighting conditions, enhancing overall user experience in AR/VR environments.
The OG0TC GS image sensor is currently available for sampling and is already in mass production to meet growing market demands. For further information or inquiries, interested parties are encouraged to contact their OMNIVISION sales representative directly through www.ovt.com/contact-sales.
