Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works, a leading player in the global steel industry, has introduced an advanced machine learning system to refine the management of oxygen levels in its blast furnaces. This innovative digital solution is designed to enhance the efficiency of cast iron production by providing precise recommendations for optimal oxygen levels.

Previously, decisions regarding oxygen supply to the blast furnaces were made based on discrete data readings. In the rapidly changing environment of blast furnace operations, such static readings often proved inadequate, sometimes leading to less accurate recommendations. MMK’s new AI-driven system addresses these shortcomings by leveraging a dynamic mathematical model that processes historical data to deliver real-time recommendations.

Alexander Pavlov, the head of MMK’s blast furnace shop, highlighted the system’s capabilities: “Experts from MMK-Informservice have developed a dynamic mathematical model that analyses gas-dynamics parameters and laboratory measurements of oxygen content in real-time. With an accuracy of 90%, this system allows our specialists to monitor the iron smelting process more effectively and significantly enhance overall process performance.”

The AI system is integrated into the control panels of several blast furnaces at MMK, including Furnaces Nos. 6, 9, and 10. It is also incorporated into the blast furnace recommendation systems and automated workstations used by operators. By improving data accuracy and correcting sensor errors, the system supports more informed decision-making during the iron smelting process.

This technological advancement represents a significant leap forward in MMK’s approach to blast furnace management. The AI system’s real-time analysis capabilities not only optimize the operational parameters but also contribute to more consistent and efficient iron production.
