In Brussels on July 15, 2024, the proposal for a European Pact for Steel was introduced by the German delegation within the European People’s Party . EUROFER strongly endorses this initiative, emphasizing the need for swift action as the EU enters a new legislative phase. The proposal calls for the creation of a high-level group, led by a prominent political figure, to oversee the transition of the EU steel industry.
Axel Eggert, Director General of EUROFER, expressed confidence in the proposal's analysis and urgency. He urged Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to endorse the initiative, highlighting the critical role of a proactive alliance among EU institutions and member states in driving transformative changes in the steel sector.
The position paper titled Europäischer Stahlpakt, European Steel Pact, launched on July 10, 2024, outlines specific measures to address key issues affecting the European steel industry. MEPs Dennis Radtke and Christian Ehler played instrumental roles in initiating this proposal, which underscores the industry's call for immediate action on issues like overcapacity, unfair trade practices, and sustainable energy access.
EUROFER has consistently advocated for policies that ensure fair competition, access to clean energy, and essential raw materials such as scrap. The proposal also aims to establish lead markets for green European steel products and strengthen the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) to safeguard against carbon leakage.
The European steel industry views these measures as crucial for maintaining its global leadership in clean technologies while securing local manufacturing capabilities. The proposed European Steel Pact seeks to integrate these goals into the EU's legislative priorities for the coming years, emphasizing the role of green investments and funding mechanisms in supporting sustainable industrial growth.
Mr. Eggert concluded by emphasizing EUROFER's readiness to engage in discussions with President von der Leyen and other EU stakeholders to advance the European Steel Pact. The industry stands united in its commitment to achieving a sustainable and competitive steel sector, underscoring that Europe's strength lies in its steel manufacturing capabilities.
