In a remarkable display of aerial prowess, the Ukrainian Defense Forces have begun actively intercepting Russian reconnaissance UAVs using FPV, First Person View, drones. This innovative approach to air defense has yielded impressive results, with recent footage released by volunteer Serhii Sternenko showcasing the successful takedown of a Russian Orlan UAV by an FPV drone operated by the Special Group "Alpha."

The incident, which occurred a few weeks ago, highlights the effectiveness of using FPV drones to counter enemy reconnaissance efforts. In the video, the Ukrainian FPV drone can be seen climbing above the Russian Orlan UAV, which is capable of reaching altitudes of up to 6,000 meters. With precision and skill, the FPV drone approached the wing of the Orlan and detonated, causing significant damage to the reconnaissance UAV and forcing it to plummet to the ground.

This is not an isolated incident, as another episode in May, taking place in the Bakhmut sector, saw a Ukrainian FPV drone equipped with a VTX 2.5W video transmitter successfully pursue and destroy a ZALA 421-16E reconnaissance drone mid-flight. Despite the Russian UAV's attempts to evade the FPV drone through active maneuvering, the Ukrainian drone managed to strike the wing, neutralizing the threat.

The use of FPV drones to intercept enemy drones is a relatively new and promising development in the field of air defense. These agile and compact drones, piloted by skilled operators, have proven to be highly effective in countering reconnaissance efforts by larger, more sophisticated UAVs. The success of these interceptions not only denies the enemy valuable intelligence but also serves as a powerful deterrent, forcing adversaries to reconsider their aerial strategies.

The Ukrainian defense and industrial complex recognizes the potential of this innovative approach and is currently developing a full-fledged anti-drone system based on FPV drones.
