SteelAsia Ships Record Steel Export to Canada, Cementing its Position as a Global Supplier

SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp., the Philippines’ leading steel company, has reached a significant milestone by exporting over P1.1 billion worth of steel products to Canada. On January 30, 2025, the company shipped 32,000 metric tons (MT) of high-strength reinforcing steel to be used for a subway project in Vancouver, Canada. This latest shipment, which was dispatched from SteelAsia’s Davao City plant, is the largest steel export from the Philippines to date, with an approximate value of $19 million or P1.1 billion.

This shipment is part of an ongoing commitment by SteelAsia to supply steel for the Vancouver subway project. To date, the company has exported a total of 87,000 metric tons (MT) of steel to the project, with an accumulated value of around P3.2 billion. The success of this export operation has cemented SteelAsia’s position as a reliable and high-quality supplier on the global stage, especially for large-scale infrastructure projects.

Global Expansion and Recognition

SteelAsia’s achievement is not just a testament to the company’s operational efficiency but also a significant recognition of the Philippines' capacity to produce high-quality steel. According to SteelAsia Chairman and CEO, Benjamin Yao, the repeat orders from the same buyer highlight the strong confidence in the company's ability to meet the demands of international projects. The success in exporting steel to Canada is a direct reflection of the growing demand for SteelAsia’s products, particularly in major infrastructure ventures worldwide.

In addition to its export successes, SteelAsia continues to serve the local market, with its biggest customers being the Philippines' top real estate developers. The company's operations across the country have positioned it as a key player in the steel industry, both domestically and internationally.

Expansion Plans and Future Investments

SteelAsia is not resting on its laurels. The company is actively investing in new infrastructure and expanding its manufacturing capabilities across the Philippines. The company operates plants in Davao, Batangas, Bulacan, and Cebu, and is currently constructing a state-of-the-art green steel H beam plant in Lemery, Batangas. This new plant will utilize the latest European steel technology, enhancing the company’s production efficiency and quality.

Looking ahead, SteelAsia has major plans for further expansion. The company is set to begin site development for a second green steel H beam plant in Candelaria, Quezon. This plant, which is expected to be operational by 2027, will be a major investment worth P30 billion and will play a significant role in reducing steel imports to the Philippines. In addition to the Batangas and Quezon plants, SteelAsia is also developing new plants in Davao City and Concepcion, Tarlac.

These new plants are part of SteelAsia’s broader strategy to reduce the country’s reliance on steel imports, support local economic growth, and create thousands of jobs. By expanding its production capabilities, SteelAsia aims to meet the growing demand for steel, not only in the domestic market but also in international markets, helping position the Philippines as a major steel exporter in Asia.
