Prosecutors in Italy have opened a manslaughter investigation after a tragic incident involving the superyacht Bayesian, which capsized off the coast of Sicily, resulting in the deaths of seven people on board. Ambrogio Cartosio, a prosecutor in the town of Termini Imerese, announced on Saturday that no suspects have been identified in connection with the incident. The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) luxury yacht registered under the British flag, was carrying 12 passengers and 10 crew members when it sank during a storm early on a Monday morning. Among the deceased was Mike Lynch, a prominent UK tech entrepreneur, who was reportedly celebrating his recent acquittal in the United States on fraud charges linked to the sale of his software firm, Autonomy, to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion. The public prosecutor’s office in Termini Imerese has filed a case “against unknown persons,” suggesting potential charges of negligent shipwreck and multiple negligent manslaughter. Cartosio emphasized that investigators are still in the initial phase and cannot exclude any developments. The sinking of a yacht that was deemed “unsinkable” by its Italian manufacturer, Perini, has left investigators puzzled, especially considering that a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed during the storm.
Civil protection officials have speculated that the yacht may have been struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, which could explain the rapid sinking. The search and rescue operation took four days to locate all the bodies, with the last one believed to be that of Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah. In addition to Lynch and his daughter, the other victims included Christopher Morvillo, one of Lynch’s US lawyers, and his wife, Neda; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley’s London-based investment banking subsidiary, and his wife, Judy; and Recaldo Thomas, the yacht’s chef. The loss of life has highlighted the risks associated with luxury boating, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
