Outokumpu Corporation, recognized globally for its sustainable stainless steel production, is making significant strides in the metal powder market for additive manufacturing. Since initiating pilot production at its Krefeld, Germany facility in April 2023, Outokumpu has set ambitious goals. The company aims to produce up to 330 metric tons of metal powder annually, utilizing 100% recycled stainless steel scrap. After a successful trial year, Outokumpu is now transitioning to full commercial production, marking a pivotal moment in its innovation strategy.
In collaboration with STAHL KREBS, a steel trading firm, Outokumpu is part of the publicly funded project REACT, supported by the German government. This partnership is expected to enhance the development of metal powders suitable for various applications. Additionally, Outokumpu is working on projects within the medical and jewelry sectors to create nickel-free materials for implants, medical tools, and watches. This initiative is also part of a public-funded project led by the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, known as HiPAM.
Marten Franz, Head of Metal Powder Business at Outokumpu, highlighted the importance of additive manufacturing in the green transition of global economies. The market for metal powder has seen substantial growth and is projected to expand from $6.75 billion in 2021 to $10.79 billion by 2029, according to Fortune Business Insights. Outokumpu aims to leverage its local production of steel scrap to contribute to this burgeoning market, offering high-quality, low-emission metal powder for 3D printing.
The company is particularly focused on producing specialized metal powders tailored for demanding applications. To meet customer-specific needs, Outokumpu operates a proprietary test laboratory where applications can be modified and validated on-site. This hands-on approach allows Outokumpu to ensure that its products meet the rigorous standards required by various industries.
Franz emphasized the company's commitment to a circular economy, stating that a sustainable and profitable economy can only be achieved through resource conservation and technological openness. Outokumpu plans to expand its portfolio of stainless metal powders by utilizing over a century of material knowledge. This includes developing materials with enhanced corrosion and thermal resistance, which are crucial for sectors such as energy and aerospace.
As Outokumpu moves forward, it is not only focusing on immediate production goals but also on long-term sustainability. The company's efforts to create innovative solutions using recycled materials align with global trends toward reducing carbon footprints and promoting environmentally friendly practices. Through collaborations and public-funded projects, Outokumpu is positioning itself as a key player in the evolving landscape of metal powder production.
