This week, the American Iron and Steel Institute announced the appointment of two new members to its Board of Directors: Neil Tannyan, USA regional manager for iron and steel at Hatch, and Doug Dunworth, president and chief executive officer for the Americas region at SMS group. Both Tannyan and Dunworth are representatives from associate member companies and bring extensive industry experience to the board. Tannyan also holds the position of chairman of the AISI Associate Member Committee, enhancing his influence within the organization.

Kevin Dempsey, president and CEO of AISI, expressed enthusiasm about the new appointments. He stated, “I am proud to welcome Neil and Doug to the AISI Board of Directors. Their expertise and work with the Associate Member Committee will bring new and exciting insights to our board. I look forward to collaborating with them and our dedicated associate members to advance the Institute’s mission and promote the American steel industry’s interests to policymakers, customers, and other stakeholders.”

Neil Tannyan joined Hatch in 2008 as a project manager and has since accumulated over 20 years of experience as a metallurgist. His career includes significant involvement in planning and managing major capital projects within the iron and steel sector. In 2021, he rose to the role of USA regional manager for iron and steel. Prior to his tenure at Hatch, Tannyan worked at Stelco, Hilton Works, where he managed pickling and cold rolling operations. His educational background includes both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Applied Science with a focus on materials engineering from the University of Toronto.

Doug Dunworth brings a wealth of experience to the AISI Board as well. He currently serves as the president and chief executive officer for the Americas region at SMS group, a position that underscores his leadership capabilities in the industry. Dunworth has previously held significant roles at SMS Technical Services and SMS Millcraft LLC, demonstrating his versatility across various management functions. His experience also includes positions at Acutus Gladwin, Birmingham Steel, and WCI Steel, covering a spectrum from operations management to engineering oversight. He holds a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering technology and an Associate of Science degree in electrical engineering technology from Penn State University.

The addition of Tannyan and Dunworth to the AISI Board is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the organization’s ties to the industry and to enhance its capacity to advocate for the American steel sector. With their combined expertise and leadership experience, the new board members are expected to contribute valuable insights that align with AISI's mission of promoting steel’s importance to the U.S. economy.
