Tata Steel, one of India's largest steel producers, is taking a bold step towards automation at its Kalinga Nagar plant located in Jajpur, Odisha. The company plans to deploy robots extensively to streamline operations and enhance productivity. Rajiv Kumar, vice-president of operations for the Tata Steel project at Kalinga Nagar, shared insights during the 11th edition of the Steel Markets Conference, highlighting the transformative potential of robotics in the industry.
Kumar explained that the Kalinga Nagar facility is at the forefront of integrating robotics, data analytics, and vision technology. These advancements aim to significantly improve safety measures while increasing operational efficiency. “We are committed to making our processes safer and more productive,” Kumar stated, emphasizing the importance of technology in modern steelmaking. The establishment of a dedicated Robot Management Department is also on the horizon, which will focus solely on the management and operation of robotic systems within the plant.
In addition to the robotics initiative, Tata Steel has recently commissioned India's largest blast furnace at the Kalinga Nagar facility. This development marks a significant milestone in the company's ongoing efforts to modernize its production capabilities. Kumar noted that when the plant began operations in 2004, the technological landscape was vastly different from today. “In 2024, we are witnessing a complete transformation in how technology can be utilized in steel production,” he remarked. The company's commitment to leveraging technology is evident in its plans to enable steel production on the caster floor without the need for human presence.
