Explosion Rocks Braeburn Alloy Steel Plant in Lower Burrell, Leaving 3 Injured
An explosion at the Braeburn Alloy Steel mill in Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, left three workers injured, two of whom were critically hurt. The explosion occurred at approximately 11:57 a.m., at the plant located on 101 Braeburn Road. Local emergency crews were quick to respond to the situation, with firefighters and medical units at the scene for the majority of the day.
Injuries and Emergency Response
According to Brennan Sites, the Chief of Lower Burrell No. 3 Fire Company, the explosion resulted in three injured individuals. Two workers suffered critical injuries and were immediately transported to nearby hospitals. One of the critically injured victims was flown by helicopter to a hospital, while the other was taken by ambulance. The third person sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to a hospital by ambulance. Thankfully, all plant employees were accounted for, and there appeared to be no additional casualties.
Despite the severity of the explosion, Sites mentioned that the explosion’s cause remains unclear and that there was no visible damage to the facility itself. The scene remained active for several hours as emergency responders worked to secure the area and ensure the safety of other workers.
Investigation Underway
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, and local authorities are handling the matter. Lower Burrell Police Chief John Marhefka confirmed that the police would lead the investigation but did not provide further information as of the latest reports. The Westmoreland County 911 public safety supervisor confirmed the incident but, like other officials, did not disclose the specifics of the explosion itself.
In response to the event, Mike Grubach, a senior vice president for Electralloy, the parent company of Braeburn Alloy, indicated that the company is aware of the explosion and has dispatched a team to the plant to assess the situation. However, he mentioned that no further comments would be made until the assessment was completed.
