Steel Authority of India Limited, one of India's largest steel manufacturers, has once again placed its trust in Danieli for a major infrastructure project. The two companies have partnered to create a high-speed bar mill with an annual production capacity of 1 million tons in Durgapur, India. Danieli will be responsible for both the design and construction of this modern facility, which promises to be among the most advanced in the country.

The new bar mill will be equipped with a range of advanced technologies aimed at improving production efficiency and reducing operating costs. At the core of this new facility is a state-of-the-art reheating furnace, designed and built by Danieli’s Centro Combustion division. The walking-beam furnace will operate with a high capacity of 220 tons per hour and will employ the latest innovations in heating technology. One of the key features of this furnace is the patented MAB burners, which are known for their high heating efficiency and ability to minimize the formation of scale, a common problem in metal heating processes. Additionally, the furnace uses a PHL firing logic system that ensures optimal fuel consumption while maintaining the best possible heating quality.

The bar mill itself will feature a high-speed delivery system, capable of achieving rapid throughput with consistent quality. It will also be equipped with a Quenching and Tempering system that enhances the mechanical properties of the bars produced. These technologies are specifically designed to minimize energy consumption while improving the overall yield and quality of the steel bars. The mill’s operation will be closely monitored and controlled by Danieli Automation’s advanced process control systems, which will be integrated with the facility’s overall operations. These systems will help the plant operate in accordance with Industry 4.0 standards, ensuring that the mill is smart, efficient, and capable of self-optimizing its processes.

A key element in the design of the new mill is its focus on reducing the environmental impact of operations. In addition to the low-emission reheating furnace, the overall setup of the plant is optimized to reduce energy consumption and minimize waste. The technologies incorporated into the mill will help SAIL maintain high levels of operational efficiency while meeting global environmental standards.

As with many of Danieli’s projects, the Durgapur bar mill will be fully integrated with digital automation solutions, making it one of the most advanced mills in terms of both production and sustainability. The smart integration of automation and the use of advanced technologies will allow the mill to reduce its overall carbon footprint, optimize material usage, and enhance the overall sustainability of steel production.

The commissioning of the new bar mill in Durgapur is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2027, marking another milestone in Danieli’s partnership with SAIL. Once operational, the facility will contribute significantly to SAIL’s production capacity, helping the company meet the growing demand for high-quality steel in India and beyond.
