BlueScope Distribution Albury has taken a significant step forward in enhancing its steel processing capabilities, recently announcing a $2.2 million investment aimed at better serving transport manufacturers in the region. This strategic move underscores the company’s commitment to supporting local businesses and improving their operational efficiency. The Albury branch is one of 16 locations within the BlueScope Distribution network, which specializes in providing a range of steel and aluminum products.
Since its commissioning in February 2022, the Albury site has demonstrated its capacity by processing over 2 metric tons of steel, specifically tailored for local manufacturers. Matthew Maw, the BlueScope Distribution Branch Manager, emphasized that the advanced plasma beamline technology will empower manufacturers by allowing them the freedom to focus on their core activities. This technology is designed to facilitate precise and efficient processing of large structural sections, which are essential for the transport infrastructure sector.
The new plasma beamline is a groundbreaking addition for BlueScope Distribution, featuring a six-axis robotic arm that offers world-class processing capabilities. This advanced technology enables high-precision steel cutting, allowing for a range of complex processing tasks. These include cutting irregular shapes, double miter cuts, notching, beam splitting, and creating weld-ready components. Such versatility streamlines the fabrication process for customers, providing them with materials that are ready to be welded or bolted together.
Sam Gerovasilis, General Manager of BlueScope Distribution, highlighted the strategic importance of this investment. He noted that expanding the Albury site and introducing advanced processing capabilities is a commitment to supporting customers in their growth journeys. By enhancing local manufacturing capabilities, BlueScope aims to build long-term partnerships that contribute to regional economic development.
The decision to upgrade the facility was partly driven by feedback from customers, who expressed challenges related to finding skilled labor and navigating complex steel supply chains.
