In a significant move for the automotive industry, particularly in the realm of electric and hybrid vehicles, Infineon Technologies AG and Swoboda have joined forces to develop cutting-edge current sensor modules. This partnership, announced on July 3, 2024, aims to address the rapidly growing market for sensing solutions in electromobility.

The collaboration brings together Infineon's expertise in current sensor ICs with Swoboda's proficiency in sensor module development and industrialization. This synergy is expected to accelerate the time-to-market for high-volume applications, primarily focusing on traction inverters and battery management systems, while also catering to other key automotive applications.

The first product of this partnership, the Swoboda CSM510HP2, showcases the potential of this collaboration. This fully encapsulated current sensor module boasts a significantly reduced footprint without compromising on performance. At the heart of this module is Infineon's TLE4973 coreless current sensor IC, enabling high-precision sensing with a total error below 2 percent.

A key feature of the CSM510HP2 is its seamless integration with Infineon's HybridPACK™ Drive G2, an automotive power module designed for traction inverters in electric vehicles. This integration eliminates the need for separate external current sensors, potentially leading to the most compact traction inverters in the market.

Klaus Lebherz, Head of Business Development at Swoboda, emphasized the simplified system integration offered by this new generation of current sensors. He noted that the combination of Infineon's latest sensor technology and Swoboda's injection molding expertise has proven to be highly effective.

Andrea Monterastelli, Head of Automotive Magnetic Sensors Product Group at Infineon Technologies, highlighted the market demand for high-performance, compact, and easily integrable current sensing solutions. He pointed out that the seamless fit of their solution into the HybridPack Drive G2 offers the most compact solution for hybrid and electric vehicles.

Looking ahead, Infineon and Swoboda are already working on developing additional current sensing solutions to serve various power devices. Their focus extends beyond traction inverters to include applications such as inverter DC link and high voltage battery management.

This collaboration comes at a crucial time for the automotive industry, which is rapidly transitioning towards electrification.
