In a groundbreaking collaboration, forestry industry leaders Tilhill Forestry and Foresight Sustainable Forestry Company have joined forces with Coleg Cambria Llysfasi to continue the Foresight Sustainable Forestry Skills Training Programme in Wales. This initiative aims to equip local contractors with essential skills and knowledge, fostering a new generation of woodland workers.
The program, first launched in 2022, has already demonstrated remarkable success. Last year, it attracted 70 candidates, with a majority completing the course and transitioning into forestry industry employment. Building on this achievement, the partners are now offering four fully funded training program placements across Wales, targeting applicants from communities local to FSF's operations.
The comprehensive training syllabus covers a wide range of forestry-related activities. Participants will engage in three week-long sessions scheduled for August, September, October, and November. The curriculum includes practical skills such as tractor driving and chainsaw operation, as well as crucial safety training like first aid. This diverse skill set provides trainees with a solid foundation to build successful careers in the forestry industry.
Tilhill Forestry, a member of the BSW Group and the UK's leading forestry and timber harvesting company, brings extensive expertise to the program. With a 75-year history that includes planting over 1 billion trees, Tilhill boasts the largest number of professionally qualified forest managers in the private sector. Their specialization in woodland creation, management, and timber harvesting adds significant value to the training experience.
David Edwards, Forestry Director at Tilhill Forestry, expressed enthusiasm for the program's continuation. He emphasized that no prior experience is required, making the opportunity accessible to motivated individuals from various backgrounds. The program particularly welcomes those currently working in agriculture or contractor-based roles, as well as newcomers aspiring to enter the forestry sector within their local community.
A unique aspect of the program is the mentorship component. Successful candidates will be paired with a Tilhill Forestry mentor who will provide guidance on developing their forestry career. Upon completing the course, participants will have the opportunity to apply for available positions within Tilhill Forestry or the broader BSW Group, as well as work on FSF's projects. This direct pathway to employment enhances the program's value and impact.
FSF, as the UK's first listed natural capital investment company, plays a crucial role in this initiative. The company invests in UK forestry and afforestation schemes, focusing on increasing the country's sustainable timber supply. Richard Kelly, Co-Lead of FSF, highlighted the company's ambitious planting goals and the critical need for skilled workers to support the expanding natural capital economy. He emphasized the importance of empowering rural communities to participate in and shape the future of sustainable forestry, aligning with key UN Sustainable Development Goals.
This collaborative effort between industry giants and educational institutions represents a significant step forward in addressing the skills gap in the forestry sector. By providing comprehensive training, mentorship, and employment opportunities, the program not only benefits individual participants but also contributes to the broader goals of sustainable forest management, climate change mitigation, and rural economic development in Wales.
