Antofagasta Minerals and ABB have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to spearhead a transformative approach to mining decarbonization. This collaboration seeks to leverage ABB's pioneering eMine™ technologies to advance the electrification of mining operations, particularly focusing on developing a net zero emission haulage solution. The partnership signifies a crucial step toward reducing the carbon footprint of the mining industry, which is essential for meeting global emissions reduction targets.

Antofagasta Minerals, a leading copper producer based in Chile, is committed to significantly reducing its environmental impact. The company has set ambitious goals, aiming for a 50% reduction in emissions by 2035 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. To date, Antofagasta Minerals has already cut its Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 928,000 metric tons. This progress underscores the company's dedication to integrating sustainable practices into its operations.

ABB, a global leader in automation and electrification, will provide its advanced eMine™ solutions to support Antofagasta Minerals’ decarbonization roadmap. The collaboration will focus on several key technologies, including the eMine™ Trolley System, which is known for its ability to reduce diesel consumption by up to 90% in specific mining environments. This technology not only lowers emissions but also enhances energy efficiency and reduces overall operational costs.

The MoU also outlines plans for a trolley trial at Antofagasta’s Los Pelambres operation. This trial is a pivotal component of the collaboration, as it aims to advance the implementation of electrification technologies within the mining ecosystem. By testing battery-powered trucks and trolley assist technologies, Antofagasta Minerals hopes to identify effective solutions for further reducing emissions in its haulage processes.

In addition to the trolley trial, ABB and Antofagasta Minerals will conduct consultative studies to assess the techno-economic feasibility of all-electric mines. These studies will evaluate various decarbonization technologies, their impact on mining operations, and the design considerations for integrating such technologies into existing infrastructure.
