Valmet Automotive, a leading automotive contract manufacturer, has made a groundbreaking advancement in its sustainability efforts by launching its first solar power plant at the Uusikaupunki facility in Finland. This initiative represents a major step forward in the company’s ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility and energy efficiency.
The construction of the solar power plant began in April 2024, covering an area of 5,000 square meters adjacent to the company’s battery and vehicle production facilities. The plant, equipped with 810 solar panels, boasts a peak output of approximately 300 kW, with an estimated annual energy production of around 290 MWh. This electricity is directly integrated into the plant's power grid, contributing to the production processes and even powering electric vehicles on-site.
Valmet Automotive's dedication to sustainability is deeply embedded in its corporate strategy, and the launch of this solar power plant is a tangible manifestation of these principles. Since 2019, the company has successfully reduced its CO₂ emissions by about 90% through various initiatives, including a transition to renewable electricity and energy. The addition of solar power further solidifies the company's leadership in green manufacturing and its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.
The partnership with Turku Energia, a prominent local energy supplier, has been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition. Turku Energia provided the Finnish-made solar panels and continues to support Valmet Automotive with electricity and portfolio management services. This collaboration highlights the significance of local partnerships in advancing sustainable energy solutions and meeting ambitious climate targets.
Jari Hallivuori, Product Manager at Turku Energia, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "Purchasing a solar power plant is a concrete step towards a more sustainable tomorrow. We are pleased with this project with Valmet Automotive and to make a positive contribution to their climate targets. The solar power plant we delivered is the first ground-mounted power plant of this scale."
Looking ahead, Valmet Automotive plans to continue its efforts to minimize CO₂ emissions at the Uusikaupunki facility by increasing the use of biofuels. The company began incorporating biofuels into its production processes in late 2023, with the goal of producing all the energy required for battery and vehicle manufacturing through renewable sources by the end of this year. This strategy not only supports the company’s sustainability goals but also aligns with broader global efforts to combat climate change.
