SensiML, a leading provider of AI/ML software for the Internet of Things and a subsidiary of QuickLogic, has made a groundbreaking announcement that is set to disrupt the TinyML market. The company has become the first to offer a complete, open-source AutoML solution for the development of edge AI/ML applications through its popular Analytics Studio application. This move marks a significant milestone in the industry, as the open-source model, which is already prevalent in highly-adopted AI libraries such as TensorFlow and PyTorch, has until now eluded comprehensive AutoML development tools targeting IoT edge devices.

SensiML's pioneering open-source offering is poised to deliver enhanced creativity, innovation, and AI code transparency to the global community of IoT device developers. By making its AutoML solution accessible to a wider audience, SensiML is expanding its access to the rapidly growing market, which ABI Research projects to reach 3.5 billion AI-enabled edge devices by 2027. This move is expected to accelerate the adoption of edge AI/ML and benefit end-user flexibility, while also boosting SensiML's Software-as-a-Service, SaaS, growth and private-label tooling value for its growing list of industry partners.

AutoML, or automated machine learning, simplifies and greatly speeds up the process of creating machine learning models, making it more accessible to developers who may not have specialized data science knowledge. Building ML models for IoT microcontrollers and edge SoCs is particularly complex, as it requires blending data science with embedded code optimization for devices with limited memory and compute power. SensiML's Analytics Studio addresses these challenges by bringing intelligent sensing capability to a broad range of IoT edge devices, enabling real-world applications such as wearable devices that analyze and coach proper human motion, predictive maintenance sensors that detect anomalies in factory machinery, and building automation endpoints with acoustic event detection and speaker identification.

Until now, IoT device developers undertaking their first AI/ML projects have had to navigate a fragmented market of proprietary tools with varying capabilities and unclear roadmaps. The open-source release of SensiML's Analytics Studio provides a platform-agnostic solution that supports a wide array of MCUs, AI/ML accelerated SoCs, and AI engines, inspiring developer confidence to build ML datasets using flexible tools not tied to specific vendors or chipsets. The solution also offers support for time-series sensor inputs, rapid innovation through community expertise, flexibility in model development mechanisms, and extensibility through custom transforms, filters, features, and classifiers.

By transitioning to a dual licensing model that includes an open-source option, SensiML is offering its IoT edge AutoML solution as a foundation code base built over seven years to benefit the broader developer community for collaborative improvement and contribution. With community support, SensiML aims to extend Analytics Studio to include generative AI model development, synthetic dataset augmentation, local LLM support, object recognition from image and video data streams, enhanced edge model tuning and learning, more hardware integrations and optimizations, and additional pre-trained model templates for real-world use cases.

Chris Rogers, CEO of SensiML, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, "Four years ago, QuickLogic, our parent company, launched the first open-source eFPGA solution. We are leveraging this success to democratize edge AI/ML development with our robust tools. This open-source initiative will accelerate edge AI/ML adoption, benefit end-user flexibility, and boost SensiML's SaaS growth and private-label tooling value for our growing list of industry partners."

SensiML will launch its public GitHub repository and AutoML engine documentation early this summer, inviting developers to receive updates and become contributors to this pioneering technology. The company's open-source version of Analytics Studio will coexist with its fully managed and supported SaaS cloud service implementation, providing users with the flexibility to choose the option that best suits their needs.
