The Vatican declared the garment sinful, and many women were initially hesitant to wear such a revealing outfit in public.

Its popularity was boosted by film stars and celebrities who embraced the style, such as Brigitte Bardot, who wore a bikini in the 1952 film "Manina, the Girl in the Bikini."
