The early development of Light Emitting Diodes faced a significant challenge related to reduced light efficiency caused by internal reflection, leading to diminished brightness. Chang-Jiang Chen, a doctoral student in electrical engineering, identified a solution inspired by fireflies' lanterns, which possess asymmetric microstructures with a larger surface area than flat surfaces. This design allows for enhanced light interaction, minimizing light trapping. Moreover, the slopes of the asymmetric pyramids create a randomization effect in reflections, providing light with a second chance to escape. Implementing these microstructures in LEDs resulted in a remarkable improvement in light extraction efficiency, reaching around 90%.

Chen's groundbreaking work is complemented by a collaborative effort from researchers in Belgium, France, and Canada, who further explored and refined this concept. Their findings indicated that incorporating asymmetric microstructures increased LED light extraction by up to 55%. Beyond efficiency gains, LEDs offer superior longevity compared to traditional bulbs, lasting up to 20 times longer. Additionally, LEDs do not contain toxic chemicals like mercury found in fluorescent tube lights, aligning with sustainability and environmental preservation goals.
