The European Union and the United Nations Development Programme recently hosted the Lagos premiere of 'Deafening Silence,' a powerful feature film that tackles the pressing issue of sexual and gender-based violence, SGBV, in Nigeria. Ruben Alba Aguilera, Head of the Governance, Gender Human Rights and Migration Section at the EU Delegation, emphasized the crucial role that culture and entertainment play in combating SGBV and promoting gender equality in the country.
'Deafening Silence,' directed by Biodun Stephen, portrays various forms of SGBV, including sexual harassment and child abuse, while underscoring the importance of educating boys to respect women. The film boasts an impressive cast, featuring renowned actors such as Chidi Mokeme, Kate Henshaw, Bimbo Akintola, Toni Tones, and Daniel Etim-Effiong. Through its thought-provoking narrative, the movie aims to spark a much-needed debate, break the silence surrounding SGBV, and challenge the stereotypes and social norms that perpetuate gender inequality in Nigerian society.
Aguilera stressed the significance of the film, stating, "Movies are a good example of how we are trying to spark a debate, break the silence, and challenge some of the stereotypes and social norms that exist in our society." He acknowledged that Nigeria is a patriarchal society with deeply ingrained preconceived ideas about gender roles, and 'Deafening Silence' seeks to challenge these notions and demonstrate that change is possible.
The movie is part of the broader Spotlight Initiative, a collaboration between the EU and UN aimed at preventing SGBV globally. Launched in 2019, the programme concluded in 2023 after a substantial investment of over one billion Naira. The initiative has yielded impressive results, including the establishment of 41 Sexual Assault Referral Centres across 20 states in Nigeria and the creation of a specialized court for prosecuting offenders.
Aguilera emphasized the transformative potential of the creative industries, particularly Nollywood, in effecting positive change in society. By collaborating with the Nigerian film industry, the EU aims to reach every household and corner of the country, encouraging people to speak up and question the status quo. The film will be screened for free in select cinemas across Nigeria, with plans for a mini TV series and another production on Netflix, ensuring maximum exposure and impact.
The EU Delegation Head expressed his optimism about the power of cinema to engender change, stating, "If every family watches the movie or series and discusses the role of women in society and the unacceptability of violence, we are making a huge difference." By leveraging the creative industries and the influence of Nollywood, the EU and UNDP are planting the seeds of change, challenging deeply rooted gender stereotypes, and advocating for a more equitable and just society.
'Deafening Silence' serves as a clarion call for Nigerians to confront the pervasive issue of SGBV and work towards creating a society where women and girls can live free from violence and discrimination. Through its thought-provoking narrative and powerful performances, the film has the potential to inspire a national conversation about gender equality and catalyze tangible changes in attitudes and behaviors.
