Nucor Towers & Structures Expands Nationwide with New Utah Facility
Nucor Corporation, a leader in sustainable steelmaking, has announced a significant expansion of its Towers & Structures business unit. The company will build its third state-of-the-art utility structures production facility in Brigham City, Utah, with an investment of $200 million. The new facility will play a crucial role in supporting the growing demand for utility infrastructure in the western U.S., driven by energy projects, population growth, and increasing load requirements.
Strategic Location to Serve Western U.S. Demand
The new Brigham City plant will be located on Nucor’s existing campus in Utah, strategically placed to meet the region’s expanding demand for utility infrastructure. The western U.S. is experiencing rapid growth in energy demand, fueled by distributed energy projects, data centers, and electrification efforts, such as the rise of electric vehicle charging stations. This has created a pressing need for new utility infrastructure, particularly in the form of steel poles and other transmission structures.
With the demand for energy supply and grid-hardening initiatives growing, local utilities are increasing their capital spending, further spurring the need for utility infrastructure in the region. Nucor’s new Utah facility will be equipped to meet these needs, positioned to capitalize on strong local demand. The facility will provide a competitive advantage through its strategic location, with freight benefits due to its proximity to Nucor’s regional steel mills, which will supply raw materials by rail.
Job Creation and Economic Impact
The Brigham City facility is expected to create 200 full-time jobs in the region, contributing to the local economy and supporting Nucor’s vision of expanding its footprint in the West. The facility will be highly automated, utilizing cutting-edge technology to streamline production and increase efficiency. As part of Nucor’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, the plant will also feature advanced hot-dip galvanizing operations, a critical process for manufacturing durable utility structures.
“Nucor has been doing business in Brigham City for over 40 years, and we are excited to expand our presence in this area,” said Laurent De Mey, Vice President & General Manager of Nucor Towers & Structures. The company has received support from several local and state organizations, including the Economic Development Corporation of Utah, the Utah Inland Port Authority, and the Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity, all of which have facilitated the establishment of the new facility.
Automation and Advanced Manufacturing for Future Growth
In line with its commitment to technological advancement, Nucor Towers & Structures plans to incorporate efficient straight-line production methods in all three of its new facilities, including those in Decatur, Alabama, and Crawfordsville, Indiana. These automated operations are designed to meet the growing needs of the utility infrastructure market while improving production efficiency. Nucor also aims to modernize and automate its existing Pennsylvania facility, which primarily serves customers in the northeastern U.S.
With the completion of these new facilities, Nucor will enhance its ability to deliver high-quality utility structures while driving forward its strategy of offering sustainable, American-made steel for the nation’s energy infrastructure.
Expanding the Towers & Structures Business
Nucor’s expansion into the utility infrastructure market began in 2022 when the company acquired Summit Utility Structures LLC, a producer of steel poles and steel structures. Since then, Nucor has focused on modernizing its acquired facilities and increasing production capabilities. The addition of the Brigham City facility, along with the two plants under construction in Alabama and Indiana, will significantly boost the company’s ability to serve the growing utility infrastructure market across the U.S.
The three facilities will be equipped with the latest manufacturing technologies and are expected to meet the increasing demand for utility structures in response to evolving energy needs, including renewable energy projects, grid upgrades, and electrification efforts.
Strengthening Nucor’s Position in Utility Infrastructure
Nucor’s investment in the Towers & Structures business unit reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to expanding its role in the growing utility infrastructure sector. The company’s expertise in steel production and its focus on sustainable, high-quality products position it as a leader in the market. With the launch of the new Utah facility and the continued modernization of its other plants, Nucor is poised to meet the increasing demand for utility structures in the U.S. and beyond, contributing to the ongoing development of energy infrastructure across the country.
Through this expansion, Nucor aims to enhance its ability to serve key sectors in the energy industry, including utilities, renewable energy projects, and electrification, while continuing to support its commitment to sustainability and innovation.
