Primetals Technologies, a leader in steel production technology, has achieved a significant milestone by receiving the Final Acceptance Certificate for its 80-ton electric arc furnace Quantum. This advanced furnace is now operational at Huaigang Special Steel, part of the Jiangsu Shagang Group, located in Huai'an, Jiangsu province. The first heat from the EAF Quantum was produced in January 2024, just five months after the initiation of installation. This rapid deployment showcases Primetals Technologies' efficiency and commitment to enhancing steel manufacturing capabilities.

One of the standout features of the EAF Quantum is its impressive production flexibility. The furnace can achieve single heats with tap-to-tap times of only 32 minutes. In July, Huaigang successfully operated the furnace using a mix of 25% hot metal and 75% scrap, with power consumption recorded at 240 kilowatt-hours per metric ton. The facility further optimized its operations by transitioning to 100% scrap in August, demonstrating the furnace's adaptability to different raw material compositions. Additionally, the ability to utilize a mix of 30% hot metal and 70% scrap further showcases the versatility of the EAF Quantum, with power consumption dropping below 230 kWh per metric ton.

Primetals Technologies has equipped Huaigang Special Steel with crucial mechanical and electrical process equipment, including a Level 1 automation system, automated charging processes, and oxygen injection systems. These advancements contribute to the overall efficiency and productivity of the steel production process. With a production capacity of 3.2 million metric tons of special steel annually, Huaigang is recognized as a leader in the high-end special steel market in China, specializing in products like spring steel and bearing steel.

The EAF Quantum not only excels in flexibility but also significantly reduces production costs. Compared to conventional EAF plants, this innovative technology achieves cost savings exceeding 20%. The high melting efficiency and effective use of raw materials contribute to the overall reduction in power consumption, making it a more sustainable option for steel production. The focus on producing high-quality special steel products aligns with industry demands while maintaining economic viability.

A notable innovation within the EAF Quantum is its scrap preheating process, which utilizes exhaust gas to preheat scrap material. This design feature, including a trapezoidal shaft and a scrap retention system, optimizes the distribution of scrap and enhances melting efficiency. By preheating the scrap, the EAF Quantum requires less time and energy to reach melting temperatures, further reducing power consumption and enhancing overall productivity.
