Alliance Steel, a prominent steel service center based in Gary, Indiana, has made a significant leap in expanding its operations by introducing a new tubular products division. This addition comes as part of the company’s broader strategic growth plan, aimed at diversifying its portfolio and increasing its market reach. The new division is located at Alliance’s established facility on 2700 E. 5th Ave., which also houses its corporate headquarters and coil processing operations. Situated at the northern terminus of Interstate 65 where it intersects with Dunes Highway, the facility is well-positioned to serve a variety of industries, including construction, automotive, agriculture, and transportation.
The newly established Alliance Tubular Products division is already in production, with plans for expansion in the coming year. The division specializes in manufacturing a range of tubular products such as structural tubing, mechanical tubing, square tubing, and rectangular tubing. These products are essential components in numerous applications, from the construction of buildings and bridges to the creation of fitness equipment and agricultural machinery. The decision to add this division reflects Alliance Steel’s commitment to meeting the evolving demands of its customers while enhancing its existing portfolio of steel products and services.
A key feature of the new division is its ability to produce high-quality tubular products without the need for additional tooling that could increase both production time and costs. The facility is equipped with a fully automated direct form line capable of producing lengths of up to 50 feet. This advanced system allows for the efficient manufacture of square and rectangular tubing, high-strength steel tubing, and electric resistance welded products. By streamlining production processes, Alliance Tubular Products can offer competitive pricing while maintaining high product quality.
The expansion into the tubular products market is part of Alliance Steel’s broader strategy to provide a more integrated range of steel solutions. The company already operates in various sectors, supplying products such as hot-rolled, cold-rolled, coated, pre-paint, and stainless steel. In addition to its core steel distribution services, Alliance Steel provides a variety of value-added services including coil slitting, heavy gauge slitting, cut-to-length, stretcher leveling, degreasing, laser cutting, toll processing, and metallurgical testing. With the addition of the new division, Alliance can now offer an even more comprehensive range of products and services to its clients.
Drew Gross, the President and COO of Alliance Steel, expressed his excitement about the new division and its potential to deliver added value to customers. “We are excited to announce our strategic expansion into the tubular products market,” Gross said. “This new addition is part of our ongoing commitment to long-term growth and sustainability. By adding Alliance Tubular Products to our portfolio, we are taking another step toward providing our customers with a wider variety of high-quality steel products and services.”
The new tubular division is also expected to benefit from the leadership of Carl Johnson, who has been appointed as the Vice President overseeing the operations of the division. Johnson’s extensive experience in the steel industry will be instrumental in ensuring the success of the expansion. The division’s growth is expected to further strengthen Alliance Steel’s position as a trusted and versatile provider of steel solutions, which already includes Alliance Processing Corp. and Alliance Fabrication and Manufacturing.
Alliance Steel has been a key player in the steel distribution and service center market, not just in Gary, but across the United States, with additional service centers in Atlanta and Memphis. The company is known for its focus on providing fast turnaround times and efficient delivery of its products. With the addition of the tubular division, Alliance aims to maintain its reputation for short lead times and responsive customer service, essential for industries with fast-paced and evolving needs.
Alliance Steel’s commitment to continuous growth is further reflected in its previous investments. In 2020, the company opened a new service center at the 300,000-square-foot ATCO-Gary Metals Technologies sheet metal manufacturing factory. This $20 million investment created 130 new jobs and enabled Alliance Steel to process and distribute steel for a wide range of applications, including commercial buildings, office ceilings, lawnmower blades, and even parts for Mercedes-Benz cars. The relocation of Alliance Steel’s corporate office from Illinois to Gary, located just across from U.S. Steel’s Gary Works mill, further underscores the company’s long-term commitment to the region and its strategic position within the steel industry.
As Alliance Steel continues to expand its product offerings and production capabilities, it is poised to solidify its standing as one of the most comprehensive steel solution providers in the industry. With the launch of Alliance Tubular Products, the company will be able to meet the increasing demand for specialized steel products across diverse sectors, ensuring that it remains competitive in a rapidly evolving market. This expansion represents not just a growth opportunity for Alliance Steel, but also a positive sign for the broader steel industry, particularly in the Midwest, where the company’s efforts continue to fuel economic growth and job creation.
