Primetals Technologies has successfully completed a significant installation at Baoshan Iron and Steel in Shanghai, China. This project involved a new combination mill that features both a wire rod mill outlet and a bar-in-coil line. The facility is designed to produce up to 600,000 metric tons annually of wire rod and bar products, marking Baoshan’s first greenfield long rolling investment since the original mill installation in 1998. This upgrade aims to increase rolling mill capacity and expand the size range of products, crucial for enhancing Baoshan's competitive position in the steel market.

The new wire rod mill outlet can handle rods ranging from 7.5 to 29 millimeters in diameter, while the bar-in-coil line accommodates bars from 8 to 50 millimeters. This expansion in size range allows Baoshan Iron and Steel to meet diverse market demands, thereby improving its market presence. The integration of advanced technology is critical to this upgrade, enabling the production of larger sizes and facilitating low-temperature thermomechanical rolling, a process that enhances the mechanical properties of steel products.

To optimize efficiency and minimize downtime, Primetals Technologies implemented four eDrive mini-finishing mills equipped with 250-millimeter ultra-heavy-duty roll housings. The eDrive technology is part of Primetals' latest innovations in long rolling solutions, designed to enhance load-carrying capacity and reduce long-term operational costs. This integrated approach allows for quick-change roll units and contributes to a more efficient production process, further solidifying Primetals Technologies' position as a leader in the steel manufacturing sector.

The scope of this project encompassed equipment supply, engineering, and site supervision services as part of an open consortium involving Baowu Steel Group and Primetals Technologies. The extensive equipment list included not only the eDrive mini-finishing mills but also guide optics, a pinch roll and laying head, high-speed pouring reels, and a comprehensive mechatronics package. This robust setup underscores the commitment to delivering state-of-the-art technology to enhance production capabilities.

In a letter of appreciation, Tang Jinsong, the Director of Long Rolling at Baosteel, praised Primetals Technologies for its specialized technical support throughout the commissioning period. He highlighted the expertise provided by the site team, which included personnel focused on rolling processes, fluids, and mechanical supervision. The personalized service from the aftermarket team also contributed to Baoshan's satisfaction with the installation, reflecting the importance of customer support in the steel industry.

Baoshan Iron and Steel, a subsidiary of Baowu Steel Group, has been a key player in the steel market since the late 1990s. The company specializes in processing, sales, and technical services for stainless steel and carbon steel alloys, including high-quality wire rod products. The latest installation is expected to enhance Baoshan's capacity to meet increasing demands for high-performance steel products in a competitive market.
