Primetals Technologies has secured a groundbreaking contract to deliver its state-of-the-art EAF Ultimate electric arc furnace to a prominent U.S. steel producer, marking a significant advancement in steel manufacturing technology. The comprehensive project, scheduled for completion by late 2026, will replace two outdated spout-tapping furnaces with a single 68-ton capacity EAF Ultimate system.

The innovative installation represents a major technological leap, featuring the first-ever implementation of Active Power Feeder technology using direct AC-AC conversion at medium voltage in the steel industry. This pioneering system utilizes Modular Multilevel Matrix converter, M3C, technology, promising enhanced energy efficiency and improved operational control. The new facility will boast an impressive annual production capacity of 0.75 million tons, specializing in medium carbon, high-alloy, and free-cutting steel grades.

The EAF Ultimate system incorporates advanced features including an eccentric bottom-tapping (EBT) system, which effectively eliminates slag contamination during the tapping process, resulting in superior steel quality. The comprehensive package includes a primary dedusting system, material handling equipment, and sophisticated Level 1 and Level 2 automation systems, ensuring optimal operational efficiency and environmental compliance.

A key innovation in this project is the integration of the Active Power Feeder with Melt Expert technology, creating a dynamic control system that optimizes the melting process. This combination delivers multiple benefits, including reduced energy consumption, lower electrode usage, and decreased production costs. The system's ability to draw symmetrical power and compensate for ladle furnace operations without additional systems represents a significant advancement in operational efficiency.

The fully automated operation of the EAF Ultimate system showcases the latest generation of electric steelmaking equipment, characterized by remarkably short tap-to-tap times and advanced control systems. This automation not only enhances productivity but also ensures consistent quality in the steel production process.

The environmental impact of steel production has been carefully considered in the design, with the primary dedusting system playing a crucial role in maintaining environmental standards. This focus on sustainability aligns with growing industry demands for more environmentally responsible manufacturing processes.
