ArcelorMittal, one of the world's largest steel producers, has announced the temporary shutdown of its Gijón steelworks and wire rod plant in northern Spain. This decision, communicated to Kallanish, reflects the challenges the company faces due to weak demand in the steel market and increasing competition from low-priced imports. The halt is scheduled to last until October 27, 2024.

The wire rod segment, in particular, has been hit hard by the influx of imported products, which has made it increasingly difficult for ArcelorMittal to maintain competitive pricing. A company spokesperson noted that the volume of wire rod imports from outside Europe has severely impacted production levels, leading to several interruptions at the plant throughout the year. This downturn underscores the broader difficulties faced by European steel manufacturers as they navigate a market characterized by fluctuating demand and pricing pressures.

The idling of the Gijón operations will directly affect more than 400 workers. However, ArcelorMittal has stated that not all employees will face layoffs. Instead, many will be given the option to take holidays or will participate in scheduled medical examinations during this period. This approach aims to minimize the impact on the workforce while addressing the immediate operational challenges.

The Gijón facility is crucial to ArcelorMittal's long steel production capabilities, which include a variety of products essential for construction and infrastructure projects. The company has invested significantly in these operations, but the current market dynamics have compelled it to take temporary measures to safeguard its financial health. The decision to idle the plant is part of a broader strategy to adjust production in response to market conditions.
