Warner Bros. Japan’s Anime Production and WIT Studio are set to debut the ten-episode original anime series “Suicide Squad Isekai” on HBO GO across Asia later this month. This anime adaptation, rooted in the DC Comics universe, introduces iconic characters like Harley Quinn, The Joker, and the Suicide Squad in fresh, imaginative narratives. The term 'Isekai' translates to 'another world' in English, reflecting the series' adventurous theme.
The storyline of "Suicide Squad Isekai" follows Amanda Waller, head of A.R.G.U.S., as she assembles a notorious team of criminals for a perilous mission. The team includes Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Peacemaker, Clayface, and King Shark, who are transported through a mystical portal into a fantastical realm filled with swords, magic, orcs, and dragons. With lethal explosives embedded in their necks, the villains face a dire ultimatum: succeed in their mission or face an immediate demise.
The show’s direction is helmed by Osada Eri, with a screenplay by Nagatsuki Tappei and Umehara Eiji. Character design drafts are created by Akira Amano, while Naoto Hosoda finalizes the character designs. The music composition is handled by Kenichiro Suehiro, ensuring a captivating auditory experience to complement the visual narrative.
Voice talent for the series includes prominent Japanese actors such as Anna Nagase as Harley Quinn, Umehara Yuuichirou as The Joker, Yamaguchi Reigo as Deadshot, Koyasu Takehito as Peacemaker, Fukuyama Jun as Clayface, Kimura Subaru as King Shark, Yashiro Taku as Rick Flag, Anzia Chika as Katana, and Kujira as Amanda Waller. Their performances are set to bring these beloved characters to life in an entirely new context.
The announcement of "Suicide Squad Isekai" aligns with Warner Bros.' broader strategy to increase the number of anime adaptations in Asia. James Gibbons, WBD President of Asia-Pacific, highlighted this expansion earlier this year, noting the studio's commitment to producing over ten anime series annually. Since its establishment in 2011, Warner Bros. Japan’s Anime Production has delivered more than 80 titles, including notable works like “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure,” “Record of Ragnarok,” and the “Batman Ninja” anime movie.
HBO GO, Warner Bros.’ Southeast Asia-only streaming platform, will premiere "Suicide Squad Isekai." However, it is anticipated that this platform will eventually be replaced by the more advanced and content-rich Max platform in the region.
