Seoul Robotics, a leader in industrial autonomous driving technology, has successfully deployed the first traffic signal system in the United States controlled by LiDAR sensor data. This groundbreaking project, located at the intersection of State Street and 5900 South in Murray, Utah, represents a significant advancement in traffic management technology. The initiative, spearheaded by the Utah Department of Transportation, aims to address critical needs for advanced sensor technology capable of detecting, counting, and tracking vehicles and other road users under all weather conditions.

The installation leverages Seoul Robotics' cutting-edge 3D Perception Engine, housed in a compact edge device, and utilizes LiDAR sensors positioned at each corner of the intersection. This advanced system creates a digital twin of the intersection, optimizing traffic flow and reducing congestion. The project exemplifies a collaborative effort between Seoul Robotics, Gades Sales Company, and Blue Band. Gades Sales Company played a crucial role in the installation and integration of the system into the local infrastructure, while Blue Band's software translates the data processed by Seoul Robotics' 3D Perception Engine into signal commands compatible with existing traffic controllers.

The installation and commissioning of the site were completed with minimal disruption to the public, showcasing the non-invasive nature of the solution. Seoul Robotics' system mounts directly onto existing infrastructure, avoiding significant road work and infrastructure changes. The team expects future deployments to be set up within two working days, emphasizing process efficiency and user-friendly interfaces. Since its installation in March 2024, the system has operated flawlessly, demonstrating a significant leap in deployment efficiency and public convenience.

The LiDAR-based system supports several traffic management features, including precise stop-bar detection, advanced vehicle detection up to 300 feet from the stop bar, and red light running detection. Additionally, the system boasts a vehicle counting accuracy of 99.8% at the stop bar, significantly enhancing traffic monitoring capabilities.

Lee Han-bin, CEO of Seoul Robotics, highlighted the system's performance, stating, "Since its installation, our LiDAR-based traffic management system has consistently demonstrated excellent detection and tracking of objects, ensuring reliable performance across all weather conditions. This technology not only meets but exceeds the demands of modern traffic systems."

Beyond vehicle flow management, the system also enhances traffic engineering by accurately counting and monitoring Vulnerable Road Users, such as pedestrians and cyclists at crosswalks and curbsides. This data is crucial for traffic engineers aiming to improve intersections for the safety and convenience of VRUs. The technology enables smart crossings where the traffic controller can adapt to the different mobility needs of pedestrians by adjusting the green light time.

Seoul Robotics leverages deep learning and extensive expertise in 3D computer vision to ensure that all perceived objects are accurately tracked and classified in real time. This capability enhances safety and traffic flow for multiple road user types, making the system a pivotal tool in modern traffic management.
