On August 8, 2024, ABB, a global leader in electrification and automation, announced a significant advancement in water conservation technology by integrating its AquaMaster4 Mobile Comms flowmeter with the Topkapi SCADA system. This integration is designed to enhance the operational efficiency of water utilities worldwide, enabling them to meet their sustainability targets more effectively. The collaboration with AREAL, the publisher of Topkapi, allows for seamless communication between AquaMaster4 and Topkapi, utilizing 4G connectivity and the FTP/FTPS protocol.

The AquaMaster4 is noted as the world’s first electromagnetic flowmeter with bidirectional connectivity, providing near real-time data for intelligent water management. This innovative feature allows for continuous flow measurement, pressure monitoring, and diagnostics, which are critical for maintaining efficient water distribution systems. By incorporating AquaMaster4 with Topkapi, ABB expands its support beyond existing systems like Symphony® Plus SCADA and System 800xA®, thereby improving data access and operational insights for water utilities.

Krishna Prashanth, Global Product Line Manager for Electromagnetic Flowmeters at ABB Measurement & Analytics, highlighted the significance of this integration. He stated, “ABB has a massive installed base of AquaMaster4 electromagnetic flowmeters globally. By interfacing AquaMaster4 Mobile Comms with the Topkapi SCADA software, we can make an even bigger difference in the markets we serve.” This integration not only enhances the capabilities of AquaMaster4 but also strengthens ABB’s position as a key player in the water management sector.

The new connectivity option facilitates improved data transmission, allowing for more detailed and accurate reports and trend analyses generated within Topkapi. This capability is crucial for utilities aiming to optimize their operations and reduce non-revenue water losses. With AquaMaster4’s ability to provide near real-time data, water utilities can make informed decisions regarding flow management and leak detection, ultimately leading to better resource conservation.

AquaMaster4 Mobile Comms was designed to be a wireless solution for continuous flow measurement, achieving 60% lower power consumption compared to previous models. This efficiency not only reduces operational costs for water utilities but also enhances their ability to identify leaks more quickly than traditional solutions. The earlier generation of AquaMaster was integrated with Topkapi 15 years ago using the outdated 2G SMS protocol, making this latest upgrade a significant leap forward in technology.

With over 50 years of experience in the water industry, ABB has established itself as a comprehensive supplier of safe and efficient solutions throughout the entire water cycle. The company’s diverse portfolio includes advanced water management and analysis tools that cater to the specific needs of the water and wastewater sectors. This extensive expertise positions ABB as a trusted partner for utilities aiming to enhance their operational efficiency and sustainability.
