BHP's Escondida mine, located in Chile, has taken a significant step towards sustainable mining operations by submitting an Environmental Impact Statement (DIA) for a groundbreaking electric trolley system. This innovative project, titled "Implementation of the Mining Truck Electrification System in Escondida Norte," is set to transform the way extraction trucks operate within the mine, particularly in areas of high fuel consumption.

The proposed electric trolley system involves the construction of a new electrical substation and transmission lines both inside and around the Escondida Norte pit. These facilities will provide electric assistance to the movement of trucks, especially when they are ascending loaded with ore. By replacing diesel propulsion with electric power in these high-consumption areas, the project aims to significantly reduce operational greenhouse gas emissions while simultaneously improving productivity through increased truck performance and travel speeds.

Alejandro Tapia, President of Escondida | BHP, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "The electric trolley system is one of the initiatives with which we seek to move towards a safer and more sustainable way of operating hand in hand with technology." He further explained that this project would play a crucial role in advancing BHP's ambitious goal of achieving net-zero operational greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The investment for this transformative project is estimated at approximately $250 million. During the construction phase, it is expected to create job opportunities for an average of 112 people per day, with a maximum workforce of 160 individuals. This not only contributes to the local economy but also demonstrates BHP's commitment to sustainable development and community engagement.

The electric trolley system is part of a broader technological transformation strategy at Escondida | BHP. The company is also progressively incorporating autonomy into its mining equipment. To date, Escondida has successfully deployed six autonomous trucks in full operation. By 2025, the mine aims to boast the largest fleet of autonomous equipment in South America, further solidifying its position as a leader in innovative mining practices.

This project represents a significant step forward in the mining industry's efforts to reduce its environmental impact. By electrifying the transportation system for heavy mining trucks, Escondida | BHP is addressing one of the most energy-intensive aspects of mining operations. The reduction in diesel consumption will not only lower greenhouse gas emissions but also potentially reduce operating costs in the long term, showcasing how sustainability initiatives can align with economic benefits.

The implementation of the electric trolley system at Escondida Norte demonstrates BHP's proactive approach to meeting global sustainability challenges. As the mining industry faces increasing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint, initiatives like this serve as a model for other mining operations worldwide. The project highlights the potential for technological innovation to drive significant improvements in environmental performance while maintaining operational efficiency in the mining sector.
