In a groundbreaking move to tackle the climate crisis, the Commonwealth Secretary-General, the Rt Hon Patricia Scotland, unveiled a new initiative that will harness the power of space technology to aid developing countries in their fight against climate change. The "CommonSpace" initiative, announced at an event hosted by the Lord Mayor of the City of London on 5 June 2024, seeks to provide these nations with the tools and data necessary to predict, manage, and recover from the increasingly frequent and severe climate disasters that disproportionately affect them.
Developing countries, despite contributing less to global greenhouse gas emissions and having limited financial resources to respond and rebuild, bear the brunt of climate-related disasters. Recognizing this disparity, the Commonwealth Secretary-General emphasized the crucial role that advances in technology and the rapid use of satellite data play in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. "I am proud to introduce our new initiative, 'CommonSpace,' which will leverage powerful space technology and data to help developing countries better predict, manage, and recover from increasingly frequent and severe climate disasters," she stated.
The "CommonSpace" initiative builds upon the success of the "CommonSensing" project, a partnership among Fiji, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and international partners, including the Commonwealth Secretariat, UK Space Agency, and Catapult Satellite Applications. This collaborative effort has demonstrated the effectiveness of working together to build climate resilience and enhance access to climate finance using satellite technology. By expanding this model through "CommonSpace," the Commonwealth aims to promote the sharing of innovative space technology, data, and research across its member countries, particularly through a dedicated "Space Data Hub."
Professor Manahel Thabet, the Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Science and Technology, will spearhead the "CommonSpace" initiative.
