BMW has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by becoming the first automaker to receive approval for a combination of Level 2 and Level 3 driving assistance systems in the same vehicle. This pioneering achievement is embodied in the new BMW 7 Series, setting a new standard in the field of automated driving and offering a unique opportunity for drivers to experience the benefits of both systems.
The BMW Highway Assistant, classified as a Level 2 system, significantly enhances driver comfort, particularly on long journeys. This advanced feature operates at speeds of up to 130 km/h (81 mph) and allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel for extended periods on motorways with structurally separated carriageways. While the driver must remain attentive and ready to retake control, the system's ability to handle steering and lane changes autonomously marks a significant step forward in driving assistance technology. The Active Lane Change Assistant further augments this by executing necessary steering movements for overtaking and adjusting vehicle speed as required.
The BMW Personal Pilot L3, a Level 3 system, takes automation a step further by allowing drivers to completely delegate driving tasks to the vehicle under specific conditions, such as in traffic jams on motorways, at speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph). This highly automated system enables drivers to engage in other in-car activities like making phone calls, reading, or streaming videos, while the car handles the driving. However, drivers must be prepared to reassume control when prompted by the vehicle, ensuring safety and readiness for unexpected situations like roadworks.
The integration of these two systems in the BMW 7 Series represents a significant advance in automotive technology, providing a comprehensive set of functionalities that enhance driving comfort and relaxation over both long and short journeys. The BMW Highway Assistant and Driving Assistant Professional are included in the optional BMW Personal Pilot L3 package, exclusively available in Germany for €6,000 (including VAT). For drivers who have already received vehicles equipped with the BMW Personal Pilot L3, the BMW Highway Assistant will be added to the range of functions free of charge from August 2024.
