The collaboration is particularly groundbreaking because it is the first project in the post-Soviet space to process gas cleaning dust, a byproduct of steel production—in an entirely waste-free manner. This dust, which is traditionally a waste product in steelmaking, contains valuable elements like zinc oxide and iron clinker. Instead of being discarded or stored as waste, these materials will now be processed and reintegrated into the production cycle, effectively reducing the environmental footprint of steel production. Andrei Ovsyannikov, the Director of Development and Commerce at ZINCUM, highlighted the significance of the project, noting that it introduces zinc and iron elements back into the economy in a sustainable way.

Ruslan Demchenko, the head of the BMZ sales department, explained that the steel production at BMZ has grown substantially in recent years, increasing from 12 melting sessions per day in the past to about 27. This surge in production has led to a greater generation of metal dust, which was previously stored in landfills by BMZ-Ecoservice. However, with the new partnership with ZINCUM, BMZ is now able to process the entire volume of this dust, turning what was once a waste product into valuable resources. The project is based on a 10-year contract, during which ZINCUM will process both the newly generated dust and the material accumulated in previous years.

This collaboration brings significant economic benefits to BMZ. One of the most notable advantages is the elimination of environmental taxes that BMZ would otherwise have to pay for storing the dust. By recycling the waste, BMZ will not only reduce its environmental liabilities but also generate additional revenue from the sale of the processed zinc oxide and iron clinker. This move is expected to improve the financial sustainability of the steel mill, as it gains revenue from a previously discarded material while also enhancing its overall environmental credentials.

The economic and environmental implications of this partnership are far-reaching.
