On August 14, 2024, a poignant farewell ceremony was held in New Delhi to honor PR Sreejesh. The event was a testament to the profound impact Sreejesh had on the sport and his distinguished career. Attended by numerous former and current players of the Indian men’s hockey team, as well as Sreejesh’s family, the ceremony featured players wearing red jerseys emblazoned with Sreejesh’s name and number, a moving tribute to his legacy.
During the ceremony, an emotional Sreejesh reflected on his 18-year journey in international hockey. He spoke about the highs and lows that shaped his career, expressing gratitude for every moment spent on the field. “Eighteen years is a long journey. I have experienced all the highs and lows but it has shaped me into the person I am today,” Sreejesh noted, underscoring the depth of his commitment and passion for the game.
Hockey India officials, including President Dilip Tirkey and Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh, were present to celebrate Sreejesh's illustrious career. Singh announced that Sreejesh would transition to a new role as the junior national coach, where he is expected to mentor and develop the next generation of hockey talent. “Sreejesh will groom someone like him in the junior team,” Singh stated, highlighting the continuity of Sreejesh's influence in Indian hockey.
PR Sreejesh’s career is adorned with numerous accolades and achievements. His journey began at the age of 12, and he made his senior debut in 2006. Over his career, he competed in four Olympic Games, including leading the Indian team at the Rio 2016 Olympics. Sreejesh’s contributions were instrumental in securing bronze medals at both the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympics, adding to his impressive resume that includes two Asian Games gold medals (2014, 2023) and two Commonwealth Games silver medals (2014, 2022).
In addition to his Olympic successes, Sreejesh played a crucial role in India’s victories at the Asian Champions Trophy, winning the tournament four times (2011, 2016, 2018, 2023). His individual accolades include the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in 2021 and the World Games Athlete of the Year award, making him only the second Indian sportsperson to receive this honor.
